SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - Jonathan Levy scored a game-high 25 points to lead nine Coyotes in the scoring column as Cal State San Bernardino defeated UC Davis 74-53, in a California Collegiate Athletic Association men's basketball game Friday evening at Coussoulis Arena.
With the loss the Aggies fall to 4-4 on the season, 1-2 in CCAA play. The Coyotes improve to 7-1 on the year, 3-0 in conference action.
The two teams traded baskets in the opening minutes and the Aggies held an early 6-5 lead four minutes into the contest. Jonathan Levy's first basket of the game, a three-pointer, gave the Coyotes the lead for good as San Bernardino slowly built the lead to double-digits. Levy did most of the damage in the first half, scoring 17 points in the opening 20 minutes on 7 of 9 shooting.
UC Davis cut the lead to two midway through the period following free throws from Thomas Juillerat, but they could get no closer as the Coyotes continued to drain jumpers, connecting on 52 percent in the first half. The Aggies kept it close as they held a 17-13 rebounding edge in the half, including eight offensive boards, as San Bernardino held a 36-22 advantage heading into halftime.
In the second half the Aggies opened up cold, going the first 6:40 without a field goal. UC Davis managed just three free throws in that span as the Coyotes stretched their lead to 22, at 49-27. Rommel Marentez found the stroke for the Aggies as he scored 11 of the first 13 UC Davis points in the half. The Aggies never cut the lead under 16 the rest of the way as San Bernardino had too much firepower and protected the ball all night, committing just four turnovers.
"We got beat in every facet of the game by a team that was better tonight," said Aggie head coach Gary Stewart.
Marentez finished the game with a team-high 15 points, all in the second half, to go with two rebounds and two assists. Ryan Moore added 14 points, four boards and a team-high three assists while Fowzi Abdelsamad was the only other Aggie in double figures with 10.
In addition to Levy, Curtis Williams added 12 points and five rebounds for the Coyotes while guard T.K. Reed finished his night with 11 assists.
UC Davis will next be in action on Saturday when it continues its Southern California road swing with a 7:30 matchup at Cal Poly Pomona.
