ROHNERT PARK, Calif. - Guard Fowzi Abdelsamad scored a career-high 25 points, including 17-17 from the free throw line, and the Aggies as a team made all 14 free throw attempts in the overtime period as UC Davis rallied for the 91-84, overtime victory over Sonoma State in a California Collegiate Athletic Association men's contest Friday evening in Seawolf Gym.
With the win the Aggies even their record at 4-4 on the season and move to 1-2 in CCAA play while the Seawolves fall to 4-4 on the year, 1-2 in conference action.
After seeing a four-point lead with 1:58 remaining in regulation erased, the Aggies kept their cool in the extra period. Sonoma grabbed its first lead since halftime following a Jermaine Thompson layup in the first minute of overtime. The Aggies would respond as Justin Stearns connected on two free throws with just under four minutes to play. That began a stretch that saw UC Davis hit all 14 attempts in overtime, keeping the Aggies in the lead after Ryan Moore's two free throws gave UC Davis its final lead of the game at 83-82, with 1:02 left.
UC Davis looked to be in control with under two minutes remaining in regulation as it held a four-point lead following Stearns' three-pointer. Another Stearns' jumper at the 1:04 mark kept the lead at four before Thompson hit two free throws, cutting the lead in half. Following a Deonta Dorrough jumper that tied the game, Stearns' jumper as time expired in regulation fell short, forcing the extra period.
In a game which saw different UC Davis players step up throughout, Moore led the charge early, scoring 13 first-half points as the Aggies forged to a 36-35 lead at halftime. In the second half, Abdelsamad took his turn in leading UC Davis as he scored 14 of his 25 points in the period, including 8-8 from the foul line.
UC Davis led by as many as eight points midway through the second half but the Seawolves continued to fight back. Dorrough led the way with 13 points in the half as Sonoma cut the lead to one with just over seven minutes remaining. The two teams would never be separated by more than five points the rest of regulation as Dorrough did it at both ends, holding Stearns scoreless until late in the half.
But each Sonoma run was countered as the Aggies displayed poise and character down the stretch, picking up its first conference victory of the season in the same venue that saw them drop a similar contest last season, also in overtime.
It was a tremendous effort, a tremendous victory," said Aggie Head Coach Brian Fogel. "I'm so proud of the way the guys kept battling and it was different guys at different times of the game. They played with extreme confidence, making offensive plays when they had to and then getting stops on defense when needed."
For the game the Aggies shot 52 percent from the floor and a blazing 90.3 percent from the free throw line, connecting on 28-31 attempts. In addition to Abdelsamad, Moore added a career- and game-high 26 points to go with his seven rebounds. Stearns finished with 16 while Dominic Callori added 14. Included in those 14 was Callori's 1,00th career-point and he is now just one of three Aggies all-time to score over 1,000 points and grab over 600 rebounds.
Dorrough finished with 24 to lead the Seawolves while Chris Oliver added 14 and seven boards while Trevor Howe scored 11.
UC Davis will next be in action on Saturday when it travels to San Francisco for a matchup against the Gators of San Francisco State. Gametime is set for 8pm.
