DAVIS, Calif. - UC Davis won the opening tip, Darius Graham scored the first points of Wednesday's Big West opener from the Pavilion with a three shortly thereafter and the Aggies never looked back as its defense held UC Santa Barbara to 15 first half points, the lowest against a Division I opponent since the Aggies limited Long Beach State (on its own floor) to only 16 during the 2014-15 season, to defeat the Gauchos 73-47.
UCSB's 15 first half points are the fewest scored by any UC Davis opponent since Cal Maritime matched that total when it visited the Pavilion on Jan. 3, 2015.
"I thought the attention to detail coming out of two days of practice, and the walk-through today was great. This team played with energy, especially defensively tonight," said head coach Jim Les.
"This is can be an elite team when everyone is locked in defensively. We have been trying to build to that point; Utah Valley was a step, today was a good breakthrough."
Throughout the first 20 minutes of the game, UCSB only connected on 6 of 24 shots from the floor and missed all six attempts from three.
UC Davis has now won all four Big West openers on its home court since joining the league in 2007, and will enter Saturday's game vs. Cal Poly, the last of a three-game homestand, with a 9-7 overall and 1-0 Big West record. With Wednesday's result, UCSB falls to 2-12 and 0-1.
UC Santa Barbara's 47 points is the third-lowest total recorded by an Aggie opponent in the Div. I era -- six more than Dartmouth, the current record holder, scored when it visited Hamilton Court (12/30/08) and recorded 41.
Chima Moneke led all players with 10 rebounds and notched his sixth double-double of the year by posting 15 points. Siler Schneider scored a game-high 16 points by hitting four of his five baskets from three, and tied a career high by collecting six boards.
With Garrison Goode also finishing with six rebounds, UC Davis outrebounded the Gauchos 42-36 overall and 31-23 on the defensive glass.
Led by Schneider, the Aggies' bench doubled up on the Gauchos' reserves, 39-19. Arell Hennings and Mikey Henn each added nine points, Michael Onyebalu canned a three and Joe Mooney recorded a field goal to comprise UC Davis' bench scoring.
Entering the locker room at halftime with a 20-point lead, built with a combination of a 12-1 UC Davis run and a 4:08 scoreless stretch of action by UCSB, the Aggies' defense carried over from one half to the other, which helped the team record a wire-to-wire victory.
UC Santa Barbara scored the first points of the second half to pull within 18, its smallest deficit post-halfime since the Aggies were able to increase its lead to as many as 34 points.
UC Davis also did a phenomenal job protecting the ball, committing a season-low 10 turnovers for the second consecutive game.
The Aggies will end their homestand Saturday afternoon vs. Cal Poly, tipoff from the Pavilion is set for 5 p.m. or 35 minutes after the women's game concludes. Saturday is the first of four home basketball doubleheaders taking place this season.
