DAVIS, Calif. - Rommel Marentez scored a season-high 26 points as UC Davis defeated Cal State Stanislaus 95-73, snapping a three-game losing streak to the Warriors, in a California Collegiate Athletic Association men's basketball game in front of 2437 Friday night at Recreation Hall.
With the win UC Davis improves to 5-5 on the season, 2-3 in conference play while the Warriors fall to 3-7 overall, 1-4 in CCAA action.
UC Davis came out with tremendous energy, playing without leading scorer Ryan Moore, who missed his second straight game due to injury. The Aggies never trailed in the contest as Fowzi Abdelsamad scored the team's first eight points. The lead grew to 20 after a Marentez three-pointer with just under four minutes left. It was one of four three-pointers for Marentez in the half.
For the half UC Davis shot 56 percent from the field and a scorching 60 percent from beyond the arc. Marentez finished with 14 in the half to lead seven Aggies in the scoring column.
Marentez came out in the second half and remained on fire as the Aggies pushed the lead back to 22 after the first five minutes. Each time Stanislaus made a run, UC Davis countered. Marentez did his damage from the outside while Thomas Juillerat controlled the paint. The freshman from Pleasanton scored a season-best 19 points on the night to go with seven rebounds.
UC Davis held its biggest lead of the game at 25 following a Gus Argenal three with :32 seconds left.
"Tonight, we put it together," said UC Davis coach Gary Stewart. "We shared the ball well, had great balance on offense, and won the rebounding battle. It was a total team effort."
UC Davis finished the night shooting a season-best 64.3 percent from the field, including 56.5 percent from three-point range. Marentez added five assists to his night, while Robert Ehsan added 13 and Phil Rasmussen finished 13 points and a game-high eight boards. Abdelsamad finished with 10. The Aggies committed a season-low nine turnovers and eight different players recorded two or more assists in the game.
Stanislaus was led by Jamal O'Quinn with 17 points while Ben Hibbing added 16 points and a team-best seven rebounds.
UC Davis continues its homestand on Saturday when it hosts Cal State Bakersfield. Gametime is set for 6 p.m. and kicks off Break The Record Night, UC Davis' annual attempt to set the all-time attendance record.
