FULLERTON, Calif. - Ralphy Holmes scored a game-high 25 points to lead five Titans in double figures as Cal State Fullerton defeated UC Davis 89-61 in a men's non-conference basketball game Saturday evening at Titan Gym.
With the loss the Aggies fall to 5-8 on the season while Cal State Fullerton improves to 7-4.
Cal State Fullerton held a seven-point lead at intermission as the two teams traded baskets early in the second half. From that point on it was all Titans. Leading 37-32, Fullerton went on a 23-5 run over the next seven minutes, 43-seconds, with Holmes doing much of the damage. He scored 12 points in the stretch that was capped by a Bobby Brown three, one of 10 on the night for the Titans.
One bright note for the Aggies was senior guard Fowzi Abdelsamad, who became the 12th player in school history to record 1,000 points for his career. His 1,000th point came on a tip-in off his own missed shot with just under three minutes remaining in the contest.
UC Davis did not help its cause in the second half, committing 11 of their 20 turnovers in the period. That, combined with the hot shooting of Fullerton, which connected on 61 percent of its baskets in the second half, including a scorching 78 percent from three-point range, was enough to do in the Aggies.
"We allowed Fullerton do whatever they wanted on the floor and when you do that it is going to be a long night," said Aggie head coach Gary Stewart. "The game went to a level of physicality we're not accustomed to playing against."
It was a quick pace early as both teams looked to push the ball up the floor. The Aggies came out strong, scoring 20 points before hitting the halfway mark of the period. Abdelsamad led the charge, scoring nine points in the opening eight minutes. Abdelsamad entered the night needing 16 points to reach 1,000 for his Aggie career and for a while it looked as though he might reach the milestone by halftime, but he and the Aggies cooled off.
The Aggies matched their biggest lead of the game at 20-16 at the 11:58 mark, but a pair of Rommel Marentez free throws was all they could muster over the next 10 minutes as the Titans used a 12-2 run in that span to take a 28-22 lead with just under three minutes remaining in the half. Thomas Juillerat's putback ended the drought as the Aggies headed into halftime trailing 35-28.
Abdelsamad finished his night with a team-high 16 points while Juillerat added 15, 11 in the second half, to go with his team-high six rebounds. As a team the Aggies shot 41 percent from the floor and were held to 33 percent shooting from three-point range, far below their season average of 40.4 percent entering the night. For the first time in their last three games, UC Davis was outrebounded, losing the battle of the boards 38-31.
Along with his 25 points, Holmes added eight rebounds and eight assists to lead the Titans, while Yaphett King poured in 17 points and Brown added 14 along with seven assists. Cal State Fullerton shot 53 percent from the field on the night and 56 percent from beyond the arc.
UC Davis is next in action on Monday when it faces UC Riverside in Riverside. Gametime is set for 7 p.m.
