SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Chrismen Oliver scored a team-high 19 points, including a key pullup jumper late in the contest to extend the Gaucho lead to seven, as UC Santa Barbara held on for a 67-62 victory over UC Davis in a nonconference men's basketball game in front of 1,215 Saturday night at the Thunderdome. With the loss the Aggies fall to 6-9 on the season while UC Santa Barbara wins its second straight and improves to 6-8. The game marked the first meeting between the Aggies and former coach Bob Williams, who led UC Davis to the 1998 NCAA Division II national championship before heading to UC Santa Barbara the following season.
Trailing by 10 with just under four minutes to play, the Aggies scored seven straight points to pull within three at the 2:55 mark. UC Davis drew no closer as a pair of Chrismen free throws and a Glenn Turner short jumper pushed the lead back to seven. With time running down the Aggies were forced to foul on each Gaucho possession, but UC Santa Barbara made enough free throws to keep it a two possession game the rest of the way. Justin Stearns drained a long three pointer to make it 66-62 iwth under 10 seconds, but that was as close as the Aggies came.
Ryan Moore scored 21 of his game-high 25 points in the second half as the senior carried the Aggies offensively for much of the half. He hit eight of 11 field goals as UC Davis shot 52 percent in the final 20 minutes, but it wasn't enough as Oliver and Cameron Goettsche hit clutch shots to preserve the Gaucho lead.
"We played hard tonight but just didn't execute down the stretch," said Aggie head coach Gary Stewart. "I thought we got tentative against their zone in the second half. Defensively we wanted to keep the game in the 50's and felt good at halftime by holding them to 28. But they exploded for 38 in the second half and give all the credit to Santa Barbara because they executed."
Both teams had their moments in the first half as the Aggies jumped out to a 10-2 lead in the opening six minutes. Back-to-back threes from Fowzi Abdelsamad and Robert Ehsan pushed UC Davis ahead early. After a slow start, the Gauchos caught fire, pushing the ball at every opportunity.
Joe See came off the bench to hit consecutive three-pointers to give UC Santa Barbara its first lead of the game at the 8:40 mark, part of a 22-4 first half run. Another three by Oliver and a pair of Derek Rasp free throws gave the Gauchos their biggest lead of the half at 24-14, with 3:40 to play.
UC Davis made a charge at the end of the half as Abdelsamad connected for three from beyond the arc and Stearns hit another to cut into the Gaucho advantage as UCSB took a 29-25 lead into halftime.
For the game Moore's 25 points were the fifth time this season he has scored 20-plus, adding a season-best nine rebounds. Abdelsamad finished with 10 points and six boards as the only other Aggie in double figures. After a poor shooting first half of 32 percent, the Aggies finished the night at 41 percent but hit just 30 percent of its threes, 10 percent below its season average.
UCSB Was paced by Oliver's 19 while Goettsche finished with 15 points, eight rebounds and four blocks. Josh Davis added 10 points and a team-high nine boards as the Gauchos held a 39-28 advantage on the boards. UCSB shot 49 percent on the night and had an Aggie season-high nine blocks on the night.
UC Davis is next in action on Monday when it continues its six-game stint away from the Pavilion with a meeting at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo. Gametime is set for 7 p.m.
