SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Fowzi Abdelsamad led all scorers with 28 points and the Aggies connected for a season-high 13 three-pointers as UC Davis defeated Cal Poly 79-56 in a nonconference men's basketball game in front of 2,234 Monday night at Mott Gym.
With the win the Aggies improve to 7-9 on the season and snap a three-game losing streak against Cal Poly. The loss is the fifth straight for the Mustangs as they fall to 3-11.
Against a Cal Poly zone defense, the Aggies looked to strike from the outside. UC Davis pushed the ball at every opportunity and benefited from the spot-up shooting of Abdelsamad, Phil Rasmussen and Ari Warmerdam. The trio combined for 10 three-pointers, many of them coming at keys points in the contest.
After a slow start in the opening six minutes, it was all UC Davis the rest of the way. Taking a one-point lead into the second half, Abdelsamad opened the second with back-to-back threes as the Aggies pushed the lead to 10 in the first four minutes. The Mustangs drew no closer than six the rest of the way as UC Davis shot 59 percent in the second half. The inside-outside combination of Ryan Moore and Abdelsamad produced 32 of the Aggies' 51 second half points as UC Davis earned its second win of the season against a Big West opponent.
"I'm really happy for the guys and the coaching staff," said Aggie head coach Gary Stewart. "This game is a testament to the resolve and fight of our team. We got down again early, but I thought we were executing and defensively I was pleased with where we were. Once we started getting the ball inn the middle against their zone we were able to hit a few threes and the game settled in."
It was a tale of two teams for UC Davis in the opening 20 minutes. The Aggies missed their first nine shots and went over six minutes before Fowzi Abdelsamad finally put UC Davis on the board with a layup with just under 14 minutes left in the half. By that time the Mustangs had built a nine-point lead and looked ready to put the game away early.
The lead grew to 18-5 midway through the period before the Aggies clawed back, thanks to the long ball. Abdelsamad, Ari Warmerdam and Phil Rasmussen each hit threes as UC Davis used a 20-4 run over an eight minute stretch to take its first lead at 25-22, with 1:50 remaining. Another Rasmussen three with 59 seconds left closed out the Aggie scoring as UC Davis took a 28-27 leading into halftime.
Abdelsamad finished the game by tying an Aggie season-high with his 28 points, to go with four rebounds. He moved past former Aggie Donte Ross and into 11th place on the all-time scoring list with 1,054 points. Moore ended his night with 21 points and eight boards, the third straight game he has scored 20 or more. Rasmussen added 10 points and seven rebounds while Warmerdam matched his career-high with 13 points.
As a team the Aggies held Cal Poly to a season-low for Division I opponents and also committed a season-low eight turnovers.
Cal Poly was paced by Mike Titchenal's 10 points, the only player in double figures. Nick Enzweiler had four boards and team-highs of nine rebounds and four assists.
After six straight games on the road, UC Davis returns to the Pavilion on Saturday to host Long Beach State. Gametime is set for 7 p.m.
