Aggies Increase Winning Streak To Five Games With 74-51 Victory Over Sonoma State

DAVIS, Calif. - Fowzi Abdelsamad scored a game-high 17 points and UC Davis increased its winning streak to five games with a 74-51 victory over Sonoma State in a California Collegiate Athletic Association men's game in front of 2348 Friday night at Recreation Hall.

With the win the Aggies improve to 9-5 on the season, 6-3 in CCAA play. The five-game winning streak is the middle of the 2000-01 season. Sonoma falls to 3-11 overall, 2-7 in conference action.

It was all UC Davis in the opening half. The Aggies scored the first six points and never looked back, building a 43-21 halftime lead. Rommel Marentez scored 11 first-half points as UC Davis shot a blistering 68.2 percent from the field, including five of 10 three-pointers. The Aggies took advantage of 15 Sonoma turnovers in the half, converting those into 19 points.

Leading 19-15 at the six-minute, 33-second mark, the Aggies went on a 21-3 run over the next six minutes to take match their biggest lead of the half. Sonoma's Kevin Christensen hit a three-pointer with 10 seconds left but Abdelsamad answered with a three-pointer at the buzzer to send the Aggies into halftime with a 22-point advantage.

Sonoma made a push early in the second half, cutting the lead to 12 at the 14:15 mark. It could not be sustained as over the next three and a half minutes UC Davis outscored Sonoma 11-2 to extend the lead back to 21. The lead didn't fall under 19 the rest of the way as the Aggies improved to a perfect 7-0 at Recreation Hall.

The Aggie defense, ranked 22nd in the nation in scoring defense, lived up to its reputation as it held Sonoma to 17 points under its season average. The Seawolves shot 46 percent for the night, but committed 25 turnovers that the Aggies converted into 32 points on the night.

UC Davis got a boost as leading scorer Ryan Moore returned after missing the previous five games due to injury. After finding his way in the first half, Moore got it going in the second, finishing his night playing 22 minutes with 14 points and a game-high seven rebounds in his first action since January 2.

 

 

Abdelsamad's 17 points marked the seventh straight game he has been in double figures. Rommel Marentez added 13 points and four assists while Robert Ehsan finished with 11 points on 5 of 6 shooting from the field. UC Davis remained perfect when shooting over 50 percent, going to 5-0 on the season after connecting for 54 percent of its attempts.

The Seawolves were led by Lamar Abbott's 12 points and five rebounds while Ryan Hensel was the only other player in double figures with 11.

UC Davis will next be in action on Saturday when it hosts San Francisco State at Recreation Hall. Gametime is set for 8 p.m.
