CARSON, CA - Ryan Moore scored 20 points off the bench and the Aggies shot a blistering 64 percent in the second half as UC Davis defeated Cal State Dominguez Hills 75-49 in a California Collegiate Athletic Association men's game Friday night at the Torodome.
With the win the Aggies improve to 10-6 on the season, 7-4 in CCAA play. The Toros fall to 6-10 overall, 4-7 in conference action.
Dominguez opened the game by jumping to a 17-5 lead in the first six minutes. Center Lamar Lawrence was unstoppable, scoring eight of those points as the Aggies had no answer for him early on. UC Davis chipped away at the lead behind a barrage of three-point baskets. UC Davis hit six three-pointers in the opening 20 minutes, two by Moore while four other players found the range.
The Aggies took their first lead of the half at the 7:37 mark when Ari Warmerdam hit a three to make it 21-20. The teams traded baskets until the end of the half when Moore hit a jumper with under a minute left to give UC Davis a 30-29 halftime lead.
The Toros owned the paint in the half, outscoring UC Davis 14-4, but the Aggie bench gave the team a needed boost, outpointing Dominguez 22-5 in the half.
In the second half the Aggies scored the first five points, including a three from Fowzi Abdelsamad to extend the lead to six in the opening minute. Another Lawrence jumper cut the lead back to three at the 14:54 mark, but the Toros got no closer. Leading by nine midway through the half, the Aggies put the game away as they closed the game on a 21-4 run.
Dominguez guard Antoine Griffin hit a jumper at the 8:26 mark to make it 54-47, but the was the last field goal of the night for the Toros. They managed just two free throws the rest of the way as the Aggie defense clamped down and the offense got going.
UC Davis scored 10 straight points as Rommel Marentez capped the run with another Aggie three. Following a Toro free throw, the Aggies scored nine more unanswered points as the lead reached 25. Warmerdam closed the scoring with two free throws for the final margin of victory.
"In the second half I thought we were good at both ends of the floor," said Aggie head coach Gary Stewart. "We got out in transition and were really efficient. We ended the game holding them without a field goal over the final eight minutes.
"Once again I thought our bench elevated us in the first half," Stewart continued. "(Down 17-5), we looked like we were in the water with no oars and they came to our rescue."
For the game the Aggie bench outscored Dominguez 37-12, sparked by Moore's 20 points and eight rebounds. Thomas Juillerat finished his night with 15 points on 5 of 6 shooting while Abdelsamad was the other Aggie in double figures with 11.
After shooting 41 percent in the first half, the Aggies were on fire in the second, hitting on 64 percent to finish the game at 51.9 from the field. The defense also stepped up, limiting the Toros to just 34 percent shooting. That included holding their top two scorers, Griffin and Eric Crookshank, who entered the night averaging 32 points combined, to just eight total points on 4 of 13 combined shooting.
Lawrence finished the night with a career-high 20 points to lead the Toros, the only Dominguez player in double figures. The Toros shot just 23 percent in the second half and other than Lawrence, could not get anything going all night.
