DAVIS, Calif. - Tyler Les' 35-foot three-pointer at the buzzer sent the game to overtime and J.T. Adenrele scored the first four points in the extra period as the UC Davis men's basketball team rode a career-high 23 points and nine rebounds by newcomer Josh Fox for a 77-70 non-conference win over Utah State at The Pavilion on Wednesday night.
The win - UC Davis' first over Utah State in three all-time meetings - kept the Aggies perfect on the young season with a 4-0 record, their best start since 1999-2000 when they were also 4-0. Utah State, which shares the Aggie nickname with UC Davis, was led by 17 points from Jalen Moore while falling to 3-2.
"I told the guys (in the locker room after the game) that this was a complete team effort tonight," said UC Davis head coach Jim Les. "Everyone worked hard, whether they were on the court on on the bench, and supported one another.
"Players were ready to compete when called upon, I think our depth helped wore Utah State down a bit, especially when the game entered overtime."
UC Davis trailed 64-61 with five seconds to go after Moore's tip-in. UC Davis inbounded the ball from mid-court with 3.8 seconds left with Les taking Fox's pass straight-on well beyond the three-point line which he launched for a buzzer-beater to send the game into overtime.
Adenrele then scored the first two buckets over the extra period as UC Davis scored the first nine points for a 73-64 lead with 1:30 to go. Corey Hawkins went 4 for 4 from the line in the final 25 seconds to help seal the win.
"J.T. took over the game once we entered overtime. He scored the first four points for us and was a beast down low," added Fox.
Fox was 11 of 14 from the field, mostly from around the basket, while adding four offensive boards in his nine total. He added three assists and a blocked shot.
"The coaches told me to take my shot if I felt confident, all credit goes to my teammates for helping me find the right spots on the floor.
"There is just something about competing inside the Pavilion, I love playing at this place," added Fox alluding to his visit two seasons ago when he competed for UC Riverside.
As a freshman, Fox set a new career high on 9 of 12 shooting when the Highlanders visited the Pavilion. Two-plus seasons later, the Aggie faithful witnessed another outstanding career-high performance.
UC Davis trailed by as many as six points in the first half before going into the break down just 29-27. Fox's layup with 18:02 left in the second half started six straight points for him as UC Davis rattled off 11 straight points as the Aggies built their largest l lead at 42-31 with 15:34 on the clock.
David Collette's jumper cut Utah State's deficit to just 46-45 midway through the second half while Darius Perkins' trey with 4:15 left tied the game 59-59. Fox put UC Davis back in front, 61-59, before Utah State rattled off five straight, setting off the exciting finish.
Josh Ritchart added 14 points for UC Davis, Adenrele had 12 and Hawkins scored 10. The Aggies were also 14-for-16 from the line.
By scoring a three on his first field goal attempt of the night, Ritchart became the 21st player in school history to score 1,000 career points.
Perkins and Chris Smith each tallied 13 points for Utah State while JoJo McGlaston finished with 11.
The Aggies will return to action on Saturday at 7 p.m. when Utah Valley visits the Pavilion.
