SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - Chet Stachitas drained five three-point field goals en route to a career-high 27 points while the Aggies suffered from a second-half scoreless drought of more than five minutes as St. Joseph's defeated UC Davis, 84-56, in the opening game of the Northwestern Mutual Shootout at the University of San Francisco Friday at War Memorial Gym.
The Aggies move to 2-4 on the season. The Hawks, members of the Atlantic-10 Conference, improve to 3-2 overall.
The teams traded early baskets in the second half as the Aggies pulled to within six at 45-39 following a Ryan Moore three at the 18:18 mark. From that point on it was all Saint Joseph's as the Aggies went cold from the field, missing 10 straight field goal attempts as the Hawks pulled away. UC Davis was held to two free throws over the next two minutes then went scoreless over the next 5:18 as Saint Joseph's extended it's lead to 18. By the next Aggie field goal, a Fowzi Abdelsamad three at the 7:33 mark, Saint Joseph had pushed the margin to 23 and put the game away.
The lead grew to as many as 32 late in the half as UC Davis made just six field goals in the final 20 minutes, hitting just 27 percent in the half. Conversely, the Hawks were on fire in the half, hitting 64 percent of their shots, including 57 percent from three-point range. They also held a 12-2 advantage on points in the paint and when the Aggies helped down low, the outside shooters of Saint Joseph made them pay. Foul trouble also hurt the Aggies as Saint Joseph's went to the line 22 times in the second half, compared to 21 times for UC Davis in the entire game.
"You had to be impressed with Saint Joseph's execution and determination," said Aggie head coach Gary Stewart. "We tried to offset their strengths with different defensive schemes, but at times it felt like we were on the Titanic and were bailing water. We talked about their ability to hit threes and they got in a good rhythm and made it difficult for us."
Both teams shot well in the first half as UC Davis connected on 50 percent of its shots while the Hawks hit for 51.6 percent. Stachitas did much of the damage, scoring 21 points in the half, making all five three-point attempts. Pat Carroll went 3-for-3 beyond the arc as Saint Joseph's shot 67 percent from long range.
It was a back-and-forth game early as their were eight lead changes in the opening ten minutes. Fowzi Abdelsamad score the first nine Aggie points, all from three-point range, as he and Stachitas traded baskets. With the Aggies leading 18-15 at the 12:05 mark, Stachitas scored the next 12 Hawk points, all from long range, as Saint Joseph's jumped out to a 27-20 lead. The Aggies cut the lead to six at 33-27 following an Abdelsamad three, but they drew no closer in the half as Arvydas Lidzius' shot jumper with 2.4 seconds left gave Saint Joseph's a 42-34 halftime lead.
For the game Abdelsamad led UC Davis with 17 points on 5-of-7 shooting, hitting 5-of-6 treys. Moore was the only other Aggie in double figures with 11. The Aggies finished the night shooting 39 percent from the field while being outrebounded 36-24.
Stachitas and Carroll carried the scoring load for the Hawks, hitting 27 and 19 points, respectively. The two combined for 10-of-11 from long range and 17-of-25 shooting overall. Dwayne Jones added seven points and a game-high 12 rebounds, while guard Dwayne Lee led all players with seven assists.
