SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - Phil Rasmussen scored a career-high 28 points and the Aggie offense shot 57 percent in the second half as UC Davis rallied from a five-point halftime deficit to defeat Longwood University, 87-72, in the consolation game of the Northwestern Mutual Shootout at the University of San Francisco Saturday at War Memorial Gym.

With the win the Aggies improve to 3-4 on the season while Longwood falls to 0-11.

Trailing 45-40 to begin the second half, UC Davis came out strong, outscoring Longwood 9-2 in the first three minutes as Fowzi Abdelsamad's three gave the Aggies the lead for good. The run was extended to 26-5 for the first eight minutes, 10 seconds as the Aggies took a 66-50 lead at the 12:15 mark. Rasmussen, Fowzi Abdelsamad and Ryan Moore combined for 23 of the points as UC Davis made 10 of its first 12 shots. The 16-point lead was the largest of the night for UC Davis and remained in double figures for much of the half.

With the Aggies leading 74-60 with just over six minutes remaining, Longwood made its final push, scoring seven straight points, all from Michael Jefferson, to cut the lead to 74-67 one minute later. The Lancers drew no closer as a pair of Moore jumpers followed by Rasmussen's fourth three-pointer of the night extended the lead back to 14 to put the game away.

"Every team goes through difficult periods where it is not firing on all cylinders and tonight was a good opportunity for us to gain a win while trying to work through some challenges," said Aggie head coach Gary Stewart. "The start of the second half we came out with better energy and better purpose to our play. I was pleased with our offensive execution for about the first 10 minutes of the second half. We got shots where we wanted and who we wanted taking them, which we haven't been doing."

Early on Rasmussen kept the Aggies in the game, ecplising his previous career-high of 15 with 17 first-half points. The lead went back and forth over the first five minutes until the Aggies scored seven straight points to take a 17-11 lead at the 13:16 mark. Rasmussen scored the final five points of the stretch, including his first three-pointer of the season after missing his first 10 attempts.

UC Davis held its biggest lead of the half at 26-19 following another Rasmussen three, but Longwood fought back. Trailing 32-28 with 6:17 left, the Lancers went on a 17-3 run as the Aggie offense went cold. Jefferson, Lamar Barrett and Maurice Sumter each scored four points in the run to give Longwood its biggest lead of the game at 45-35 with :43 seconds in the half. A pair of Thomas Juillerat free throws and a Rasmussen three with :01 second left cut the Lancer lead to five and gave UC Davis momentum heading into the break.

Rasmussen ended his night hitting 11-of-13 shots, including four-of-six from long range, for his 28 points. He added five rebounds and four assists in 32 minutes of play. Moore, who scored two points in the first half, finished with 18 as did Abdelsamad, who hit four three-pointers for the fifth time in seven games this year. UC Davis finished the night shooting 48.4 percent from the field and 82.6 percent from the foul line, the fifth time in seven games UC Davis has been above the 80 percent line.

Longwood was led by Jefferson's 23 points while Sumter added 14 as the only other Lancer in double figures. Barrett ended his night with eight points and a game-high nine rebounds.

UC Davis is next in action on Saturday when it hits the road to face Stanford at 7 p.m.
