DAVIS, Calif - William Jessup scored the first basket in Saturday's non-conference contest at the Pavilion -- the Aggies' first home event in a month after embarking on a Div. I program-long seven-game road swing -- but UC Davis responded with a 22-2 run, spanning 5:23, to build a 24-8 lead early in the first half. Another 12-3 first-half run, and a 10-0 scoring outburst early in the second half helped the Aggies record an 87-64 victory.
UC Davis will return to the road for its next matchup, taking place at Air Force on Dec. 22, before enjoying a brief holiday break. The Aggies will enter that road game with a 6-6 record while William Jessup, a team that entered with wins in its last four straight, falls to 10-4.
Led by Chima Moneke and his 18 points, four UC Davis players finished in double figures. Lawrence White, on 4 of 6 shooting overall and a perfect 4 of 4 effort at the line, added another 14. On three free throws and three shots from three (on as many attempts), Siler Schneider scored another 12; J.T. Adenrele completed the list by chipping in 10 or more points for the second straight game, by finishing with 10.
Throughout the entire afternoon, not just during those key scoring runs, UC Davis' ball movement was phenomenal and kept William Jessup on its heels. The Aggies recorded 20 assists, one short of a season high, out of their 29 baskets.
UC Davis' also enjoyed stellar free throw shooting from all six players who drew trips to the stripe. In addition to nailing their first 11 straight attempts, the team tied a season high by scoring 20 points at the line, out of its 25 attempts.
The Aggies shot 29-of-56 from the floor (.518), 9-for-19 from three (.474) and .800 at the stripe compared to a William Jessup team that finished 23-for-65 (.354), 9-for-31 (.290) and 9-for-10 (.900) respectively.
The Warriors took an early 3-0 lead by scoring the first points of the afternoon, but UC Davis responded with the first of three scoring runs to build a lead that lasted until the final buzzer.
William Jessup connected on eight of its first 11 baskets from distance. However, UC Davis' defense was a main reason why the Warriors were forced to shooting from behind the arc because the Aggies did not allow back-to-back two-point baskets until the 12-minute mark of the second half.
In the second half, the Warriors struggled to generate clean looks from behind the arc and only connected on one of their 13 attempts.
Led by Adenrele, Moneke and Schneider with a team-high six, UC Davis outrebounded William Jessup 40-31 overall and 31-21 on the defensive glass.
In addition to Schneider's 12, Mikey Henn and Arell Hennings scored seven points, Joe Mooney and Michael Onyebalu posted four points and Georgi Funtarov hit one of his two shots from the floor to comprise the Aggies' 36 bench points.
UC Davis' game on Thursday at Air Force will tip at 1 p.m. PT/2 p.m. MT, and air on the Mountain West Network.
