DAVIS, Calif. - The Big West Conference wasted no time in organizing the marquee matchup of the season, in its opening week of competition, by pitting UC Davis and UC Irvine against one another during the first day of league action.
Last season, the Aggies and Anteaters battled one another in a thrilling Big West Conference Tournament championship game, one UC Davis won inside the Honda Center by a 50-47 score to punch its first-ever ticket to the NCAA Tournament.
That matchup involved the league’s top two teams; both were found atop the BWC’s standings throughout last year’s league schedule, and entered the 2017-18 season as the league's top two teams in numerous preseason media polls.
For the first time since that historic matchup, the Aggies will place their 15-game home win streak, the sixth-longest in the nation, on the line when they square off against their Southern California rivals in the inaugural conference game of the year for each team. UC Davis, victorious in two of its last three overall games, has won two of its last three games versus the Anteaters and two of the last three head-to-head games played on Hamilton Court.
As the league’s No. 1 defense — a staple of a Jim Les-led team, and bragging rights the Aggies proudly earned throughout the last few seasons — UC Davis allowed 65.9 points throughout non-conference play.
The only BWC team to post an opponent scoring average under 70 points, UC Davis, one of 15 public four-year universities in the nation with high graduation rates leading to high incomes, will face a UCI roster that scored 70.8 ppg throughout its first 16 played. By comparison, the Aggies averaged 71.1 ppg throughout its 14-game non-conference slate.
Series Record: UC Davis trails 23-16
Last UC Davis Win: 3/11/17 - N, 50-47
Last UC Irvine Win: 3/4/17 - A, 79-49
Series Streak: UC Davis +1
