BOSTON - Senior communication major Chima Moneke is one of 40 players included in this year’s Lou Henson Award Mid-Season Watch List when CollegeInsider.com announced its updated group of candidates on Thursday. He is one of 40 players vying for this annual award, which is bestowed to the top Division I mid-major player.
Moneke is also on the watch list for the Lute Olson Award, presented to the top D-I player in the country.
Throughout the Aggies’ non-conference schedule, the Canberra, Australia, native was the only mid-major player in the nation averaging 20 points and 10 rebounds (or more).
Entering his team’s 7 p.m. Thursday night league matchup at UC Riverside, a game ESPN3 will broadcast for a national audience, Moneke’s individual statistics place him among the nation’s elite talents.
Ranked No. 12 in the NCAA with his 7.69 defensive rebounds per game average, he is No. 15 in double-doubles (8) and free throw attempts (109), No. 23 in rebounds per game (9.9), No. 35 in free throws made (76), No. 41 in total rebounds (129) and No. 62 in scoring (19.0 ppg).
Moneke is a key reason why UC Davis, last year’s Big West Tournament champion and league representative at the NCAA Tournament, strengthened its national reputation as a program on the rise, possessing one of the toughest defenses in the nation.
CollegeInsider.com will announce this year’s Lou Henson selection on March 31 in San Antonio, site of the 2018 NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship.
After Thursday night’s tilt at UC Riverside, Moneke and his teammates will return to action Saturday evening at Cal State Fullerton in a Big West Conference battle that will also air across the nation on ESPN3. Tipoff from Titan Gym will take place at 6 p.m.
