OPENING TIPS: UC Davis returns home for just its third home game in the past 54 days while trying to end a 14-game losing streak... They’ll bring in an offense that current features one of the top three-point attacks in the country... The Aggies entered the week ranked 29th among all NCAA Division I teams in 3-pters/game (8.2) and are 38th in 3-pt percentage (.383)... The former mark leads the Big West while the latter is second... Sophomore G Tyler Les, who earlier this season made a school-record tying eight treys at San Jose State, is ranked 10th nationally in 3-pt percentage (.466) and is 46th for 3-pters per game (2.7)... UC Davis is on school-record pace for most 3-pters made (244, ‘08-09)... It’s twice made a season-high 14 in a game and have canned at least 10 six times... Les (48), G/F/ Josh Ritchart (37) and G Ryan Howley (21) have combined for 106 3-pters, 72 percent of the team’s total... The Aggies held Pacific to just 18 field goals last weekend, an opponent-low this season, and just 36.7 shooting, the lowest for an opponent in the past 13 games... UC Davis has had a different leading scorer over each of the past four games while six different Aggies have either led or shared high-scoring honors over the past five... Ritchart’s 12 blocked shots are both team and career-highs... After being outrebounded by at least 10 boards five times in their first 10 games, UC Davis has not had that happen since while having opponents grab a total of just 19 more over the past nine... Thursday marks homecoming for UC Santa Barbara head coach BOB WILLIAMS who won 156 games during an eight-year tenure at UC Davis that culminated with the 1998 NCAA Division II Championship.
ALL-TIME SERIES VS. GAUCHOS: UC Santa Barbara and UC Davis started playing in the 1926-27 season with the Aggies winning the first two matchups... The Gauchos, however, have won 19 of the past 22 games and lead the all-time series 19-5... They’re 8-1 since the Aggies joined the Big West in 2007, have won six straight and nine of the past 10... The Gauchos needed overtime and 29 points from G ORLANDO JOHNSON to hold off the Aggies 93-86 in overtime last season in Santa Barbara... Former G Mark Payne countered with 33 points for UC Davis which shot 55.4 percent... G/F Josh Ritchart had 17.
ALL-TIME SERIES VS. MUSTANGS: Cal Poly owns a 30-12 lead in their all-time series with UC Davis which began in 1947-48... The Mustangs won the first nine games in the series while the Aggies later won four straight from 2004-05, part of span in which they captured eight of 12... Cal Poly has won three of the past five including both games last year... G Eddie Miller scored a game-high 15 points for the Aggies who lost a narrow 48-43 matchip at The Pavilion last season... The Mustangs also took a 65-56 win at Mott Gym later in the season... UC Davis’ last home win in the series came 83-63 in 2010.
UCSB SCOUTING REPORT: The Gauchos had a modest two-game winning streak snapped by Big West leader Long Beach State last Saturday, 71-48, after opening its three-game homestand with wins over UC Irvine (74-56) and Cal State Northridge (69-61)... G ORLANDO JOHNSON, on the John Wooden Award Preseason Top-50 list and a two-time All-BWC first-team member, leads UCSB in both scoring (19.6) - also tops in the BWC - rebounding (15.4) and assists (3.0).. G JAMES NUNNALLY is also in double-digit scoring (15.4) and and is close behind Johnson on the boards (6.1)... Johnson has a team-high 29 3-pters while C ALAN WILLIAMS has a team-best 21 blocks... The Gauchos are outscoring (72.3-68.7) and outrebounding (38.4-35.2) their opponents so far this season.
CAL POLY SCOUTING REPORT: The Mustangs tied an NCAA record by making their first 11 3-pters against Cal State Northridge last week, cruising to a 100-54 win... G KYLE ODISTER had four treys while G AMAURYS GERMIN had three... Cal Poly’s defense held the Matadors to just 12 field goals and 23.1-percent shooting... F DAVID HANSON (11.4), F WILL TAYLOR (10.9) and Fermin (10.6) are each in double-digit scoring while Taylor’s 7.8 rpg. average and his 11 blocks are team-highs... The Mustangs give up a BWC-best 57.0 ppg, are third in shooting defense (.410) and first in 3-pt percentage defense (.315)... Fermin is second in the conference in assists (3.7) while G DYLAN ROYER (.532) is tops from beyond the arc... Cal Poly’s win over CSN halted a two-game losing streak.
PACIFIC 64, UC DAVIS 48: G Eddie Miller and G Tyler Les each hit a trio of three-pointers on Saturday night for UC Davis but Pacific used a game-high 19 points from ROSS RIVERA as the Tigers beat the Aggies in a Big West Conference men’s basketball game at Alex G. Spanos Center... UC Davis was held to just three baskets and eight points over the final 13 minutes, 41 seconds of the first half while the Tigers broke a 10-10 tie with an 11-3 run to help them take a 30-18 halftime lead... The Aggies got to within 35-25 after a three-pointer by Les with 15:14 to go in the game but could not break into single digits... The Aggies held Pacific to just 36.7-percent shooting.
LES TIES SCHOOL RECORD: G Tyler Les tied a school record with eight 3-pters against San Jose State on Dec. 20... He made five in the second half and was 8 for 9 overall... Les’ treys doubled his previous best - done four times previous this season already - while giving him a career-high 24 points... His percentage (.889) is tied for third-best in a game in Div. I while his eight made are tied for 10th.. Three other Aggies also made eight in a game, most recently F KYLE BRUCCELERI against Northern Colorado in 2006.
STARTING LINEUPS: The Aggies have used 11 different starting lineups in their 18 games, including a stretch of eight straight games with a different quintet... Only G Ryan Howley has started each of the games.
HOT RECENTLY FROM THREE: The Aggies have made 52.4 percent (22 for 42) of their three-point attempts the past two games, going over the 50-percent in each... Their high-water mark this year came at San Jose State on Dec. 20 when they made 12 of 20 (.600).
OFFENSIVE BOARDS COMING ‘ROUND: UC Davis has had double-digit offensive rebounds five times this season but three of them have come over the past four games... Nearly half of the boards (41 of 87) have been off the offensive glass... F Alex Tiffin has a team-high 20 offensive boards representing 45.5 percent of his total rebounds.
EARLY DEFICITS: UC Davis faced double-digit deficits in the first halves of its first four Big West games, battling back to at least tie the first three... The Aggies trailed Cal State Fullerton 38-22 before knotting the matchup with 2:15 left in the game, were down 25-15 to UC Riverside before taking a 19-18 lead later in the half, and fell behind UC Irvine 16-5 before taking a 27-26 lead with 4:10 to go before halftime... UC Davis was down 14-2 at Long Beach State last week, later getting back to within two before trailing by six at the break.
...ON THE OTHER HAND: The Aggies turned the tables on their opponents at Cal State Northridge, jumping to a 22-9 lead and then holding a double-digit lead in the second half before the Matadors rallied for the win... It ws their biggest lead since going up 17 in the first half against Sacramento State on Nov. 22
3-PT PARADE: G Tyler Les has a career-high 48 treys and is just nine away from cracking the top-10 single-season list... G Fowzi Abdelsamad had a school-record 83 in 2003... At his current rate, Les would finish with 80
RITCHART TIES CAREER HIGH: G/F Josh Ritchart, the Big West Co-Freshman of the Year last season, had five treys at Cal State Fullerton on Dec. 29, tying his career high already achieved twice earlier this season and once last year... Ritchart opened the year with eight straight double-digit scoring games before cooling off... He’s reached the mark in his last two.
NCAA STAT LEADERS: UC Davis is ranked 29th nationally in 3-pters per game (8.2) and 38th in pct. (.382), its best showings in the national stat rankings... G Tyler Les is 10th nationally among individuals from beyond the arc at 46.6 pct. and is 46th in 3-pters per game (2.7).
NBA PEDIGREES: UC Davis features three players whose fathers have played in the NBA... G Tyler Les is the son of head coach Jim Les who spent seven seasons in the NBA, including four with the Sacramento Kings; G Tyrell Corbin is the son of current Utah Jazz head coach Tyrone Corbin who played 13 years professionally; and G Corey Hawkins is the son of former NBA sharpshooter Hersey Hawkins, currently an executive with the Portland Trailblazers... Hawkins, who transferred from Arizona State this fall, will not play this season due to NCAA transfer rules... He’ll have three years remaining.
FIFTH YEAR IN BIG WEST: The Aggies enter their fifth season in the Big West Conference after officially joining the league in 2007... UC Davis is 21-49 (.300) in its previous four seasons, earning trips to the conference tournament in 2009 and 2010, the latter when it advanced to the semifinals... The Aggies are 47-96 (.329) at the Div. I level overall... They had a program-best 14 wins in 2009-10, finishing 14-18 overall.
ROSTER MAKEUP: Ten of UC Davis’ 15 players are underclassmen... Broken down, the Aggies’ roster is comprised of four freshman, six sophomores, three juniors and two seniors.
LES ASSEMBLES STRONG STAFF: HEAD COACH Jim Les went near and far when putting together his assistant coaches... Kevin Nosek, a member of the Aggies’ 1998 NCAA Division II Championship team, returns for his ninth year with the program while fellow alum Gus Argenal, who graduated in 2004, is back for his second stint with UC Davis... He was most recently at Chico State... Veteran Chris Davis, who Les faced in the Missouri Valley while he was at Bradley and Davis at Drake, joins the Aggies after three seasons in the Big East at Providence where he was the Friars’ recruiting coordinator.
COMING VIA TRANSFER: Four players have made their way to UC Davis from other schools, three of them from Div. I programs... G Eddie Miller (Cal), F Harrison Dupont (The Citadel) and G Corey Hawkins (Arizona State) are four-year transfers while G Paolo Mancasola is a JC transfer from Shasta College.
UC DAVIS SIGNS THREE: The Aggies announced G DARIUS GRAHAM (Sacramento HS, Sacramento, Calif.) and F TYLER OTT (Desert Hills HS, St. George, Utah) signed National Letters of Intent during the first day of the signing period on Nov. 9 and then added G OLIVIER-PAUL BETU (Worcester Academy; Worcester, Mass.) this past Wednesday... Graham averaged 10.6 ppg and was an All-Metro Conference first-team pick last year while helping the Dragons to the NorCal Regional semifinal final... Ott averaged 14.6 ppg last year and is an all-state honoree at Desert Hills... Betu, originally from Montreal, is the fourth-rated guard in Canada’s prep class of 2012 and the 18th-rated player overall... He averaged 15.1 ppg. and 5.1 assists last year.
SYPKENS OUT FOR SEASON: Head coach Jim Les said that G Ryan Sypkens will be sidelined the remainder of the season due to injury (knee)... Sypkens averaged 14.5 points over the first four games of the season... Sypkens will seek a medical hardship waiver to help the junior guard preserve a season of eligibility.
SLOW START: The Aggies are 1-17 for the first time since 1947-48 when they began 0-17 and finished 2-18.
LOOKING AHEAD: UC Davis returns to the road next week to begin the second half of Big West action, traveling to face UC Irvine (Feb. 2) and UC Riverside (Feb. 5)... They’re the only road games during a seven-game stretch.
