DAVIS, Calif. - The UC Davis men's basketball team is organizing a relief effort at Wednesday night's game against Pacific to aid the victims of the devastating earthquake in Haiti. Under the direction of the program's Larry P. Swanson Leadership Council, all student-athletes and coaches will be making a contribution to the American Red Cross. The Aggies are also asking anyone who can help to also make a donation in person at Wednesday's game.

"In focusing so closely on school and basketball on a daily basis, it is very easy for us to lose track of what is going on in the world around us," said Leadership Council member and senior Dominic Calegari. "It is important for us to realize how privileged we are to be at such a wonderful school doing what we love everyday while so many people are dealing with war, poverty, or, specifically, the catastrophe that has struck Haiti. It is our duty as members of society to take care of those who are less fortunate than us. We ask that those who are capable to please join us in our efforts."

The Swanson Leadership Council consists of Calegari, juniors Joe Harden and Mark Payne and sophomore Jelani Floyd.

"This effort tomorrow night is something every student-athlete was adamant about doing," said UC Davis head coach Gary Stewart. "A tragedy of the magnitude of Haiti requires those of us who are able to support those who are in need whether they are in this country or in other countries. We certainly want to try to do our part to alleviate some of the pressures that come with this tragic incident. You can't help but be touched by the things they are going through, and we're hopeful we can have a great response to what we're trying to do."

Wednesday's game is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. Fans may make donations in person at The Pavilion.
