OPENING TIPS: UC Davis plays its final nonconference game of the regular season when the Aggies visit Seattle, facing the Redhawks for the third straight year... It's the first time in that span, however, that the teams are meeting just once during the season... The Aggies are coming off a 70-65 win at Northern Arizona on Saturday, battling back from a trio of 21-point deficits in the first half and a 45-26 hurdle at halftime... The comeback was the Aggies' largest in a victory since moving to NCAA Division I in 2007-08 and its biggest since rallying from 17 down to beat UC Irvine 108-107 in overtime last year... They've enjoyed three double-digit deficit comeback wins since the `08-09 season, including rallying from 12 back to beat Seattle 88-78 on Feb. 15, 2011, the last road win before a 14-game skid (16 including neutral site games) ended with Saturday's victory over the Lumberjacks... G Tyler Les had four second-half 3-pters, his eighth game with at least that many... He has 69 treys this season, fourth-most in an Aggie season, and three more than teammate G Ryan Sypkens who had 66 last year and was previously fourth... F Harrison Dupont averaged 18.0 ppg and 6.5 rpg in the Aggies' last two games, putting together back-to-back career-high scoring efforts (17, 19)... UC Davis has won consecutive games for the first time since January 2011 and is trying for its first three-game winning streak since the `09-10 season... G Paolo Mancasola has a 5.0 assist/turnover ratio over his last seven games while averaging 28.5 min/game... UC Davis has averaged just 11.5 turnovers its last four games.
ALL-TIME SERIES VS. SEATTLE: The Aggies and Redhawks have met five times since starting their all-time series in the 2003-04 season with UC Davis owning a 3-2 lead... The Aggies won both matchups last year, getting 20 points and five rebounds from G Eddie Miller in an 80-59 home win on Nov. 27, 2010, and then using four players in double figures - including 15 points from Miller - in an 88-78 road win on Feb. 15, 2011... UC Davis trailed 45-40 in the latter game before battling back for its last win away from The Pavilion prior to Saturday's game at Northern Arizona.
SEATTLE SCOUTING REPORT: The Redhawks have won their past three games - the last two at home - four of their past five, and six of eight... F AARON BROUSSARD has been one of the primary cogs in that surge, scoring 33 points in a 100-99 overtime win at Longwood on Feb. 11 to start the winning streak... He's averaging 18.3 ppg, the only player in double figures, has a team-high 38 steals and is averaging 6.5 rpg.... Seattle is scoring 74.6 ppg, slightly less than the 75.3 it's allowing... G STERLING CARTER has been the Redhawks' primary threat from long distance, canning 57 treys... Seattle raced to a 43-35 halftime lead against Pepperdine on Thursday night before winning 81-70... G CERVANTE BURRELL had 19 points - going 11 for 11 at the line - while Broussard had 17 and Carter added 16... Seattle had just nine turnovers in the game and blocked nine shots, including five from F ERIC WALLACE who has 38 for the season... Burrell has been very effective helping run the offense, averaging 4.5 apg... Led by 7.7 rpg from Wallace, Seattle is outrebounding its opponents this season, 40.7-37.7 pg... The Redhawks have completed a reclassification to NCAA Division I status and will join the Western Athletic Conference this fall.
RECAP: UC DAVIS 70, NO. ARIZONA 65: G Harrison Dupont scored 19 points and G Tyler Les hit four three-pointers as UC Davis used an improbable comeback to battle from 21 points down in the first half and beat host Northern Arizona 70-65 in an ESPN Sears BracketBuster game on Saturday night... UC Davis outscored NAU 44-20 in the second half, rallying with a 34-7 run to take a 60-52 lead before the Lumberjacks fought back to tie the game 61-61 with 3 minutes to go... But G Paolo Mancasola hit a pair of free throws, DuPont added one of his own and the Aggies led 64-61 with 1:48 to go... NAU got to within a point two more times but DuPont's three-point play with 15 seconds to go just about it sealed it 69-65. He capped it with a free throw with just one second to go... NAU had runs of 12 and 10 points in the first half, shot 61 pct. from the field and led by 21 points three times before going into halftime down 45-26.
STARTING LINEUP VARIETY: The Aggies have used 15 different starting lineups, including different quintets in 10 consecutive games earlier this season... They've used three in their past six games with F J.T. Adenrele, G/F Josh Ritchart, G Paolo Mancasola, G Tyler Les and G Eddie Miller starting the last two wins.
BIG WEEK FOR DuPONT: F Harrison Dupont has been instrumental in the Aggies' modest two-game winning streak... He's averaged 18.0 ppg. and 6.5 rpg. while shooting 56.5 pct... He scored a then career-high 17 points during the Aggies' 73-64 win over Pacific last Tuesday before establishing a new career-high with 19 points during Saturday's win at Northern Arizona... He had 11 points during the Aggies' second-half comeback, making a layup that tied the score 50-50 with 11:47 left after UC Davis trailed 45-26 at halftime... DuPont had the Aggies' last six points, including making a three-point play with 15 seconds left that put them up 69-65.
TURNOVERS DOWN: The Aggies have had just 11 turnovers twice in their past four games and 12 in the other two, their best four-game performance of the season... They're averaging 15.0 for the season.
BEST SHOOTING OF THE YEAR: UC Davis shot a season-high 51 pct. from the floor on Saturday, the third time it's made at least 50 pct. in a game but the first time it's resulted in a win.
MANCASOLA ON POINT RECENTLY: G PAOLO MANCASOLO has been especially effective running the Aggies' offense over his last eight games when he's averaged nearly 30 minutes of court time... He has 30 assists, just six turnovers (5.0 a/to ratio) and has a steal in each of the last four games... Mancasola has also shot 87.5 pct. from the line, making 9 of his past 10.
DOUBLE-DOUBLE FOR RITCHART: G/F Josh Ritchart posted his first career double-double with 16 points and a career-high (and Aggie season-high tying) 13 rebounds on Feb. 9 against Cal State Northridge... It's the first double-double for UC Davis this season and the Aggies' first since former G Joe Harden went for 16 points and 10 rebounds in a 65-56 loss at Cal Poly on Feb. 3, 2010.
NCAA RANKINGS: UC Davis continued to be among the top three-point shooting teams in the country, ranking 24th among Div. I teams in percentage (.387) and 28th for treys/game (8.2) entering this past weekend... G Tyler Les was 14th for accuracy (.445) while he (48th, 2.6) and G/F Josh Ritchart (82nd, 2.4) were both in the top 100 for treys made.
AGGIES IN BIG WEST TOURNEY: The top eight teams in the league standings advance to the Big West Tournament (Mar. 8-10) in Anaheim... Despite a 2-11 BWC mark, UC Davis will advance to the tournament by virtue of Cal State Northridge being ineligible for postseason consideration.
INJURIES TAKE THEIR TOLL: Five different Aggies have suffered injuries this season which have limited their playing time... G Harrison Dupont (head) missed four games due to injury, including three to start the year; G Eddie Miller (leg) missed five due to injury but was limited to just a few minutes in several others; G Ryan Sypkens (knee) played in the first four but is sidelined for the remainder of the year; G/F Josh Ritchart (flu) missed the UCSB game on Jan. 26; and G Ryan Howley (knee) has sat out the last eight games after leaving the game at Pacific after just two minutes... Altogether, UC Davis players that have seen action on the court this year have missed a total of 42 games.
IT'S RAINING THREE'S: G Tyler Les (69 treys) and G/F Josh Ritchart (59) are fourth and 10th, respectively, on the Aggies' single-season three-point chart... Les needs eight more to catch GREG SCATTINI (77, 1990), who is third, and 14 to tie school-record holder G Fowzi Abdelsamad who had 83 in 2005... UC Davis is averaging 8.2 pg and is on pace to break the school record of 244 from 2008-09.
LES TIES SCHOOL RECORD: G Tyler Les tied a school record with eight 3-pters against San Jose State on Dec. 20... He made five in the second half and was 8 for 9 overall... Les' treys doubled his previous best while giving him a career-high 24 points... His percentage (.889) entered the weekend tied for fourth-best in a game in Div. I while his eight made were tied for 13th... Three other Aggies also made eight in a game, most recently F KYLE BRUCCELERI against Northern Colorado in 2006.
... AND RITCHART NEARLY DOES: G/F Josh Ritchart nearly matched Les' 3-pters at SJSU by canning seven against Long Beach State on Feb. 11, including making six in the second half... His previous high was five treys, done most recently at UC Riverside on Feb. 4.
ENDING THE STREAKS: The Aggies' victory against Cal State Northridge on Feb. 9 halted an 18-game losing streak... It was the program's longest since dropping 22 in a row during the 1952-53 (13 gms) and 1953-54 (7 gms) seasons... The longest losing streak in program history was 24 straight covering parts of two seasons from 1950-51... UC Davis is trying to avoid its 23rd loss which would tie the most for in a season (2006-07)... It's 14-game road losing streak came to an end at Northern Arizona on Saturday; a streak that started with the last two road games last year and the first 12 this season... It included neutral-site games.
NBA PEDIGREES: UC Davis features three players whose fathers have played in the NBA... G Tyler Les is the son of head coach Jim Les who spent seven seasons in the NBA, including four with the Sacramento Kings; G Tyrell Corbin is the son of current Utah Jazz head coach Tyrone Corbin who played 13 years professionally; and G Corey Hawkins is the son of former NBA sharpshooter Hersey Hawkins, currently an executive with the Portland Trailblazers... Hawkins, who transferred from Arizona State this fall, will not play this season due to NCAA transfer rules... He'll have three years remaining.
ALL-TIME IN BIG WEST: The Aggies are in their fifth season in the Big West Conference after officially joining the league in 2007... UC Davis is 23-54 (.299) in its previous four seasons, earning trips to the conference tournament in 2009 and 2010, the latter when it advanced to the semifinals... The Aggies are 50-101 (.331) at the Div. I level overall
COMING VIA TRANSFER: Four players have made their way to UC Davis from other schools, three of them from Div. I programs... G Eddie Miller (Cal), F Harrison Dupont (The Citadel) and G Corey Hawkins (Arizona State) are four-year transfers while G Paolo Mancasola is a JC transfer from Shasta College.
UC DAVIS SIGNS THREE: The Aggies announced G DARIUS GRAHAM (Sacramento HS, Sacramento, Calif.) and F TYLER OTT (Desert Hills HS, St. George, Utah) signed National Letters of Intent during the first day of the signing period on Nov. 9 and later added G OLIVIER-PAUL BETU (Worcester Academy; Worcester, Mass.)... Graham averaged 10.6 ppg and was an All-Metro Conference first-team pick last year while helping the Dragons to the NorCal Regional semifinal final... Ott averaged 14.6 ppg last year and is an all-state honoree at Desert Hills... Betu, originally from Montreal, is the fourth-rated guard in Canada's prep class of 2012 and the 18th-rated player overall... He averaged 15.1 ppg. and 5.1 assists last year.
LOOKING AHEAD: UC Davis returns to play its home finale on Saturday night against Big West foe Cal State Fullerton... Seniors G Eddie Miller and F Adam Malik will be honored in pregame ceremonies.
