IRVINE, Calif. - UC Davis sophomore Josh Ritchart, who posted a double-double against Seattle before scoring 20 points during the Aggies' upset win over Cal State Fullerton on Saturday, was named the Big West Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week, it was announced on Monday afternoon.
Ritchart, a 6-foot-9 guard/forward from Auburn, was instrumental in UC Davis winning for the fourth time in six games. He averaged 18 points and 10 rebounds as UC Davis split games last week. The Aggies lost at Seattle 73-59 on Monday while never trailing during Saturday's 78-75 home win against second-place Cal State Fullerton.
Ritchart opened his week with his second double-double of the season, scoring 16 points with 12 rebounds at Seattle. He followed that with 20 points, eight rebounds, four assists and two steals as UC Davis turned back the Titans. Ritchart also blocked two shots in Saturday's game including a potential game-tying three-point attempt in the final seconds.
"You look at his stats and it's a well-rounded game," said Aggie coach Jim Les. "We knew coming in what a good scorer and good shooter Josh is but he's starting to rebound, the other night he had four assists, he's blocking some shots (and) he's having a presence defensively.
"I think we've held him accountable to having more impact on the game than just being a shooter," he added. "It's great for him to do that and you can see what a different team we are when he does have that type of aggressiveness. I'm really glad the league recognized him for his play."
Ritchart posted back-to-back games with at least four three-pointers for the second time this year and now has 67 treys this year, fifth-best for an Aggie season all-time.
UC Davis, 5-23 overall and 3-11 in the Big West, snapped Cal State Fullerton's six-game winning streak while continuing its recent surge. The Aggies will finish the conference season at Cal Poly on Thursday and UC Santa Barbara on Saturday before facing regular-season champion Long Beach State in the Big West Tournament quarterfinals on Mar. 8 at Honda Center in Anaheim.
