DAVIS, Calif. - For the third time in the last four seasons, UC Davis will head to the postseason after earning an automatic berth in the National Invitation Tournament by winning the Big West Conference’s regular season championship. When announced Sunday night on ESPNU, the Aggies learned that they earned the No. 7 seed in the Saint Mary’s quadrant, and will face No. 2 Utah in the event’s first round.
Tipoff from the Jon M. Huntsman Center, located on Utah’s main campus in Salt Lake City, is set for Wednesday night at 6 p.m. PT/7 p.m. MT. ESPN3 will provide a live stream of this matchup, the third all-time between the Aggies and Utes.
These teams first met in 1990 and last faced one another again in 2013, with both games taking place in Salt Lake City.
The winner of this matchup will face the winner of No. 3 LSU-No. 6 Louisiana, with the higher seed hosting this second round contest, barring any facility conflicts.
First round play is scheduled for Tuesday, March 13 and Wednesday, March 14, with the second round running March 16-19. Quarterfinals will be held on March 20 and 21 and four teams will advance to New York City for the semifinals on Tuesday, March 27. The NIT will conclude with the Championship game on Thursday, March 29. The semifinal and championship games will be played at New York’s historic Madison Square Garden for the 81st year.
The first two rounds, in addition to quarterfinal games, will take place at various campus locations.
Notre Dame, Baylor, USC and St. Mary's earned No. 1 seeds in the 32-team NIT field released Sunday. The field features 22 teams with at least 20 wins, 12 automatic qualifiers and representation from 21 of the 32 Division I conferences. All of this year’s NIT games are being televised by ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU and ESPN3.
Utah finished tied for third in the Pac-12 with a 19-11 overall and 11-7 league record. The Utes dropped their quarterfinal game vs. Oregon, in last week’s league tournament, by a 68-66 score.
UC Davis’ last NIT appearance took place in 2015 when it faced Stanford in its inaugural Division I postseason appearance.
