DAVIS, Calif. - Earlier this month, SB Nation and College Sports Madness each selected Chima Moneke as their Preseason Big West Player of the Year. The senior forward can add another award to his 2017-18 collection now that College Sports Madness named him to its Preseason All-Mid-Major third team.
The Canberra, Australia native's selection is well deserved after his outstanding debut season for the Aggies last season.
Moneke, the Big West's defending rebound champion (9.5 rpg) enjoyed an outstanding debut season for the Aggies last year, averaged 14.6 ppg, shot .527 overall and led the league in nine different categories: field goals made (192), rebounds per game, defensive rebounds (249), defensive rebounds per game (6.9), total rebounds (341), blocks (51), blocks per game (1.4), double-doubles (14) and double-figure rebound games (17).
The conference's Newcomer of the Year, and all-league first team selection, played his best basketball throughout the final weeks of UC Davis' season. He averaged a double-double of 12.0 points and 15.4 rebounds per game, and shot .473 overall throughout his team's historic five-game run through the NCAA and Big West Conference tournaments.
UC Davis' 2017-18 season will begin on Nov. 13 at Northern Colorado -- the first of a season-opening five-game road swing that also includes another rivalry game vs, Sacramento State at the Golden 1 Center, the state-of-the-art downtown home of the Sacramento Kings. A home-and-home series against Northern Colorado will conclude on Nov. 29 when the Aggies compete inside the Pavilion for the first time this year.
