DAVIS, Calif. - Josh Ritchart, one of the top three-point shooters in the Big West Conference who made at least five treys in a game five times last season, has been named to the 2012-13 Madness Big West Men's Basketball Preseason All-Conference second team by College Sports Madness.Ritchart, a 6-foot-9, 235-pound junior from Auburn, joined guards Lorenzo McCloud (Pacific), Keala King (Long Beach State), Daman Starring (UC Irvine) and forward James Ennis (Long Beach State) on the second team
Ritchart enjoyed a productive sophomore season for the Aggies in 2011-12, averaging 11.3 ppg. while connecting on 36.9% from beyond the arc, fourth-best in the Big West. He canned a career-high seven treys against Long Beach on Feb. 11 and had five each against Bryant University, Eastern Washington, Cal State Fullerton and UC Riverside.
Ritchart led the team in scoring 10 times and either led or shared rebounding honors in 10 games. He averaged 5.1 rpg, double his average from 2010-11 when he was named the Big West Co-Freshman of the Year and was a Freshman Mid-Major All-American by CollegeInsider.com.
"I'm really pleased with the progess of Josh. He's worked really hard to expand his game," said second-year head coach Jim Les. "He obviously came here as a great shooter and that still reigns true, but now he's so much more versatile, particularly on the offensive end. He's able to post up, he's putting the ball on the floor (and) he's developing a mid-range game.
"I'm also really pleased with his rebounding and defense. They've made dramatic strides," he added. "For a guy that came in as such a talented shooter, to want to expand his game and become an all-around player is a testament to him and his work ethic."
Ritchart is one of six returning letterwinners for the Aggies who are preparing for their season opener on Nov. 9 at Oklahoma State. UC Davis will host exhibition games against UC Santa Cruz (Nov. 1) and Menlo College (Nov. 6) before the regular season begins. Admission to both games is free.
