A defensive back for UC Davis from 1992 to 1995, Buckley served three seasons on the Aggie football staff - as a volunteer assistant in 1996, then a defensive backs coach in 1997 and 1998. He moved to the Northwest to become a graduate assistant at the University of Idaho while earning his master's degree in sport science. He coached outside linebackers and defensive backs until he completed his degree in 2001. Buckley returned to his Aggie roots in 2005 to once again serve as defensive backs coach. He later ascended to the post of assistant head coach after the retirement of Fred Arp.
Originally from Milpitas, Calif., Buckley returned to his home state to coach defensive backs at Humboldt State for one season, then embarked on a three-year stint on the Stanford football staff. He served a year as a defensive assistant for the Cardinal, then the 2003 and 2004 seasons as an associate director of football operations. Buckley graduated from UC Davis in 1996 with degrees in rhetoric and communication and English. In fact, during his undergraduate years, Buckley was a beat writer for the California Aggie newspaper, covering baseball and wrestling and writing a weekly column.
Buckley and his wife Kara reside in Woodland with their daughters Kristen and Kaitlyn.
