DAVIS, Calif. - The UC Davis football program and head coach Bob Biggs announced Wednesday that 13 outstanding student-athletes have signed National Letters of Intent and will join the Aggies as part of the 2012 recruiting class.

The recruiting class features six offensive players, six on the defensive side of the ball and one special teams player. Offensively, UC Davis adds one quarterback, three wide receivers and two offensive lineman. Two linebackers, two cornerbacks, a safety and a defensive tackle make up the defense's signees, while the Aggies also picked up a kicker.

The 2012 recruits will be the first freshman class to compete in the Big Sky Conference, with UC Davis set to begin its inaugural season as a member of one of the top Football Championship Subdivision leagues. This year's freshmen class will also get to learn from one of the most accomplished coaches in Aggie history before Biggs retires following the 2012 season.

Below are quotes from Biggs as well as a list and bios on each of the student-athletes.

BIGGS ON THE RECRUITING CLASS

"We are very excited about the recruiting class that we have coming in. This class really piggy-backs on the last couple years, in terms of a strong recruiting class with quality depth. We answered a lot of the needs that we had with this group. With only 13 seniors graduating this year we were able to sign some quality student-athletes that will be able to contribute early. I think it is a win-win for both our program and the players we brought in."

"I think we answered a lot of questions regarding the depth at some of the positions we recruited this year. We landed a very talented quarterback in Ben Scott. We've had an eye on him for over a year and we're glad that he stuck with us. Ben really complements our current group of QBs. We added more athleticism to our wide receivers group with Delvin Alexander, Ramon Vargas and Luke Williams. Those were our top three choices at receiver and we were fortunate to be able to sign all of them. Alexander and Vargas both are deep threats and Williams is a great combination receiver. We also added more depth and size to our offensive line with Armando Ceja-Lua and Kevin Gavigan. We're happy with the offensive line position where we already have some quality young players."

"Defensively, we really had to focus on our linebackers because we lose six to graduation next year. We were able to bring in the quality players we were looking for in that position with Russ Reeder and Brady Stibi. At corner and safety we continued to add depth with the addition of Nate Walker, Patrick Wells and Keleen Culberson. With the versatility of these players, their upside is through the roof. Kyle De Vaughn was somewhat overlooked because of his size at defensive tackle but we were very happy to sign him. He is so competitive and hard-nosed and reminds me of Andrew Benjamin, one of our current defensive tackles."

"After the graduation of kicker Sean Kelley, we are extremely excited to sign Marcus White. Marcus led the state in touchbacks last season and gives us the ability to keep the ball deep on kickoffs. In addition to his kicking duties, he is an excellent punter. All-in-all, we brought in a very strong class that will add significant depth to our team."

"Having played a number of Big Sky teams in previous years, I think it's important that we continue to recruit a good combination of athleticism and size. Our physical play needs to continue to complement our skill. We were able to add those qualities with this year's class."
