DAVIS, Calif. - First-year UC Davis head football coach Dan Hawkins announced 30 National Letter of Intent commitments on the first day of the national signing period Wednesday. Adding the two mid-year transfer signees in December, that brings the 2016-17 recruiting class to 32, significantly larger than the Aggies' previous record class of 18, set in 2010.

Hawkins' first class largely consists of Californians -- 28 of Wednesday's signees hail from the Golden State -- with representation from Oregon and Arizona. Four are transfers from community colleges while the remainder comprises high school seniors.

More important than their football accolades, says Hawkins, are the new arrivals' overall accomplishments as students and people. The majority of the class lettered in multiple sports, ranging from track & field to tennis, and rugby to volleyball. All are exemplary students -- as UC Davis admits must be -- with several earning straight-A grades and holding memberships to such academic entities as the National Honor Society and California Scholarship Federation. The class includes numerous team captains, citizens who are active in their local churches and community organizations.

"We talk about the quality balance of life that is important for us to exemplify and mentor, and it's also important for us to bring in," Hawkins said. "We're looking for those well-rounded people as students and athletes. We like leaders, team captains and student body presidents. We like people who are engaged in the community and who look at outside interests. Within that category, we love those guys who were champions and who know how to win. That's their background and pedigree."

"To me, that's what exemplifies our program. Those are the people we want to attract to UC Davis and who we want to mentor."

Hawkins took over as UC Davis' 17th all-time head football coach on November 28, and largely assembled his coaching staff during the latter parts of December, resulting in a short window for finalizing recruiting.

"I think we've done a nice job coming in on the back end of the process," he said. "I like the makeup of this class. They come from outstanding, dynamic families. They've done a lot of things. This class is in line with our values: we are dealing with really extraordinary people who are very engaging."
