DAVIS, Calif. - New UC Davis football coach Ron Gould made his first recruiting class an impressive one, signing 15 outstanding student-athletes to national letters of intent on Wednesday while bringing to a close a rapid-fire recruiting season that began after he was named head coach in December.

Eight of the signees are on the offensive side of the ball, including four linemen, while the remainder are on the defensive side, including four on the line. One quarterback, two running backs and a wide receiver round out the offensive signees while two linebackers and a safety complete the defensive newcomers.

Despite the late start to the recruiting season, Gould is extremely pleased with the 2013 class, especially considering he wasn't named head coach until Dec. 18 and had to quickly assemble his staff and making recruiting plans.

"The assistant coaches did a tremendous job of coming together," he said. "There are blessings in everything you do and it happened to be an (NCAA) dead period (when we started) which afforded us a lot of time to really iron out all the wrinkles, kind of scour the state of California and find some great kids that fit what we are looking for."

He was particularly excited about the strength of the recruiting class along the line of scrimmage. More than half the signees make their home on the line.

"It's a high premium for offensive and defensive linemen and we're very pleased with the young men that we were able to get," he said. "Again, the staff did a tremendous job of, one, evaluating and, two, of nailing all the guys down.

Overall, we're very pleased with the class," he added. "We battled some WAC schools and Mountain West schools on a lot of these kids. Anytime you're able to get those kind of players, we're heading in the right direction with the program."

The Aggies will open the 2013 season on Aug. 31 at South Dakota before playing the first of six home games when Northern Arizona visits Aggie Stadium on Sept. 7.

A list of the signees and brief bios of the 2013 signees are on the next page.
