DAVIS, Calif. - The highly anticipated 2012 UC Davis football season is set to kick off this week as head coach Bob Biggsand the Aggies begin preparations for a competitive schedule with preseason football drills starting Friday at Aggie Stadium.
UC Davis student-athletes report to campus on Thursday and will attend administrative meetings in the evening before diving into the first practice of the season on Friday at 10 a.m. All practices will take place at Aggie Stadium as the 2012 squad begins to lay the foundation for a home opener with Azusa Pacific on Thursday, Aug. 30 at 6 p.m.
UC Davis starts its inaugural season in the Big Sky Conference this year after finishing 4-7 overall in 2011 with a 1-3 mark in the Great West Conference. The Aggies return 22 seniors, 20 starters and nine all-conference players from a year ago.
"The coaching staff and the players are anxious to get going," said Biggs. "I think we all want to erase the memory of last year and get ready to do something really special this season. We have a highly motivated football team..."
The veteran group looks to send coach Biggs out on a high note, as the 2012 season marks his 20th and final year as head coach.
"I know a lot of people will want to talk on this being my last season but it's really not the focus of the program," stated Biggs. "We know what we need to do and we are focused on having a successful season. I haven't given much thought to it being my last season. We are concentrating on what we need to do now in order to get ready to play."
Following the first practice on Friday, the Aggies will suit up in full pads starting on Aug. 7. The opening scrimmage of the preseason will be on Saturday, Aug. 18, followed by the annual Blue-Gold scrimmage and the "Meet the Aggies" event on Thursday, Aug. 23 at 7 p.m.
"There is always a lot of excitement and anticipation of the first practice," said Biggs. "When the time comes to take the field we will have done everything we can to prepare ourselves."
