DAVIS, Calif. - A challenging portion of UC Davis' home schedule, featuring back-to-back games against last year's Big Sky co-champions began last weekend with an attention-grabbing 48-24 blowout victory vs. North Dakota. This Saturday, an Eastern Washington team ranked No. 10 in this week's NCAA Coaches and Stats FCS media poll will visit Aggie Stadium in the league's featured matchup of the weekend.

With a win, the Aggies will preserve their undefeated home record this season and enter its upcoming bye week with positive results against two of the top programs in the nation.

Saturday's league tilt will feature a UC Davis team ranked No. 1 in the conference in pass defense and No. 2 in scoring defense, squaring off against an Eagles roster ranked No. 1 in pass offense and total offense.

This game will also feature Jake Maier and EWU's Gage Gubrud, two of the top quarterbacks in the nation. In addition to each possessing a handful of top 10 NCAA statistics, Maier and Gubrud are also ranked No. 1 and 2 in total offense and passing yards per game.

UC DAVIS VS. EASTERN WASHINGTON
UC Davis will host Eastern Washington for the second time in the program's history this Saturday -- the first since the 2014 season
The Aggies have dropped all five head-to-head games vs. the Eagles

SCOUTING EASTERN WASHINGTON
Any conversation pertaining to Eastern Washington, last year's co-Big Sky champions, starts with junior quarterback Gage Gubrud
With Gubrud, the Big Sky's Offensive Player of the Week the last three weeks leading the way, the Eagles rank No. 3 in the FCS in passing offense (358.4 yards per game) and No. 7 in total offense (469.4)
Gubrud ranks No 2, among all FCS quarterbacks, in points responsible per game, No. 3 in total offense (368.0), No. 4 in passing yards (347.2), No. 6 in TD passes (13)
In last week's home game, EWU cruised past Sacramento State, 52-31, to push its Big Sky record to 2-0
The Eagles are 3-2 overall; after falling to Texas Tech and North Dakota State in the first two games of the season, the Eagles defeated Fordham, Montana (their Big Sky opener) and Sacramento State
During the team's three-game win streak, Gubrud is averaging 465.0 ypg, completed 69 percent of his passes, thrown for 12 TDs, rushed for another three and caught one
By finishing with 447 passing yards (on 35 completions) vs. the Hornets, Gubrud posted 399 yards or more for the third game in a row

FOOTBALL UNITES US ALL

UC DAVIS' IRONMAN
When the Aggies take the field against San Diego this weekend, Fred Arp will witness, in person, his 449th UC Davis consecutive football game
Arp was an assistant coach with the Aggies for more than 40 years before retiring at the end of the 2007 season
His accomplishments as defensive line coach, and his reverence from the players he mentored, led to his enshrinement in the Cal Aggie Athletics Hall of Fame in 2010

NO EASY WEEKENDS THIS SEASON
UC Davis' first victory of the year, earned at home vs. San Diego, took place against the second of six 2016 postseason opponents on the Aggies' schedule this year
Other opponents include San Diego State, Weber State, North Dakota, Eastern Washington (this weekend's opponent) and Cal Poly

BUCKLE UP, THINGS COULD GET WILD
If last week's numbers, posted by UC Davis and Eastern Washington vs. their respective opponents, are any indication
Both UC Davis and Eastern Washington finished their games against North Dakota and Sacramento State with 651 yards of total offense
That total marks the third time EWU surpassed the 600-yard mark this season
The Aggies' total is a Division I record, and represents the highest total by the program since racking up 658 against New Mexico Highlands back in September of 2001

MAIER NAMED NATIONAL PERFORMER OF THE WEEK
By recording 415 passing yards and throwing four touchdowns, both career highs, to lead UC Davis past North Dakota in a 48-24 rout over last year's co-Big Sky champion, College Football Performance Awards selected the La Habra, Calif., native as its National Performer of the Week, for the week ending on Oct. 2
This is the second time this season the CFPA honored Maier; he earned National Honorable Mention (week ending on Sept. 19) after leading the Aggies past Portland State

LEADING THE AGGIES' AERIAL ATTACK
Jake Maier's 415 yards in the win over North Dakota ties him for No. 6 in school history (matching J.T. O'Sullivan) for the most passing yards in a game
This also marks Maier's fourth straight 300-yard passing game
Only Greg Denham has a longer streak; he ended the 2008 season with five straight games

DOSS LIKE A BOSS
With 199 receiving yards against the Fighting Hawks, Keelan Doss came just one tick shy of becoming the  first-ever Aggie to record two 200-yard receiving games
Doss' career high was the 207-yard output in last year's Causeway Classic
Doss' performance vs. North Dakota now ranks No. 6 on the school's single-game receiving yards list, just behind Mike Bellotti (204 vs. Humboldt State, 1972)

HE'S ON THE NCAA'S LIST
UC Davis sophomore quarterback is not only one of the Big Sky's best quarterbacks, but one of the nation's as well since he holds top-10 stats in five individual NCAA FCS categories
Maier is ranked No. 3 in completion percentage (.718), No. 4 in passing yards (1685), No. 5 in passing yards per game (337.0), No. 7 in total offense (333.4 ypg) and No. 9 in passing TDs (12)

PART OF UC DAVIS' DYNAMIC DUO
Maier is not the only Aggie who holds some of the best numbers in the nation since junior wide receiver Keelan Doss also holds top-10 individual marks
Doss leads all FCS players in total receiving yards (662), ranks No. 3 in receiving yards per game (132.4) and No. 4 in receptions per game (8.2)
Doss' receiving yards and receptions per game figures are Big Sky highs

SOMETHING HAS TO GIVE
By allowing 181.0 yards per game, UC Davis' pass defense is ranked No. 1 among all Big Sky teams
That unit will face a stern test in Eastern Washington, a team that leads the league with its pass offense (358.4) and total offense (484.6)

SATURDAY'S 1-2 PUNCH
However, the Eagles defense will face a UC Davis offense that is ranked No. 2 in pass offense (343.6) and total offense (469.4) among all Big Sky squads

NO POINTS FOR YOU!
UC Davis is ranked No. 2 in the league in scoring defense, allowing 24.8 points per game compared to an EWU defense ranked No. 12 by allowing 37.8 points

THE 'D' IN UC DAVIS STANDS FOR DEFENSE
Thanks to the Aggies' special teams play, two players are ranked No. 1 or No. 2 in the nation in their respective categories
Senior linebacker Ryan Bua has three fumble recoveries to his credit this season (the first of his career), and is ranked No. 1 among all FCS players
When UC Davis visited Portland State on Sept. 16, senior defensive back Darryl Graham returned a punt for a touchdown; that play is the reason why he is  No. 1 in the nation in Punt Return TDs

GEARING UP FOR THIS YEAR'S GAUNTLET
Based on this year's preseason polls, the Aggies have one of the most difficult schedules, among all Big Sky schools, this season
On this year's slate are games against all four of last season's league playoff teams in Weber State, North Dakota, Eastern Washington and Cal Poly
Rankings, from toughest to easiest schedule, provided by Bill Lamberty, Montana State Media Relations
Big Sky teams not played this season are in parenthesis

1. Portland State (Northern Colorado, Sacramento State, Southern Utah, UC Davis)
2. UC Davis (Montana, Montana State, Northern Colorado, Portland State)
3. Southern Utah (Idaho State, Montana, Montana State, Portland State)
4. Montana State (Cal Poly, Sacramento State, Southern Utah, UC Davis)
5. Sacramento State (Montana, Montana State, Portland State, Southern Utah)
6. Montana (Cal Poly, Sacramento State, Southern Utah, UC Davis)
7. Northern Colorado (Eastern Washington, Portland State, UC Davis, Weber State)
8. Weber State (Northern Arizona, Northern Colorado, North Dakota, Sacramento State)
9. Eastern Washington (Cal Poly, Idaho State, Northern Arizona, Northern Colorado)
T10. Idaho State (Eastern Washington, Northern Arizona, North Dakota, Southern Utah)
T10. North Dakota (Cal Poly, Idaho State, Northern Arizona, Weber State)
12. Northern Arizona (Eastern Washington, Idaho State, North Dakota, Weber State)

OH CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAIN
UC Davis' 2017 team captains, as voted on by the student-athletes, are:

Derek Baljeu - Gr., TE
Keleen Culberson - Sr., DB
Brock Dale - Sr., QB

PASSING FANCY
In his second game as an Aggie, Jake Maier threw for 369 yards against (RV/RV) San Diego, the third-highest total recorded in the program's Big Sky era, and the
second-highest vs. Division I opponents
Maier did not wait long to record another 300-plus yard effort since he threw for 316 the very next week at (RV/RV) Portland State
The following week, the economics major became the first Aggie QB in the program's Big Sky era to throw for 300 yards in three consecutive games
Maier continued to shine when the Aggies returned home to face North Dakota last year's co-Big Sky Conference champions
That night, he set a new Big Sky-era record by throwing for 415 yards
Of the 12 300-yard games earned by Aggie quarterbacks since UC Davis became a Big Sky program in 2012, Maier is responsible one-third of those totals

NOW HE IS THE LEADER OF THE PACK
For the first time in the program's Big Sky era, Keelan Doss recorded four games of 100 or more receiving yards when he hauled in 199 vs. North Dakota
Before that game against the Fighting Hawks, the organizational studies major was one of three players to post three 100-yard games in a single season
The other two are Chris Martin (2015) and Ramon Vargas (2014)

BREAKING UP IS HARD TO DO
Unless you are junior defensive back Vincent White
White is responsible for nearly half (7) of the Aggies' 15 pass breakups
UC Davis' game at Portland State (9/16) is when White made a name for himself by recording four PBUs -- the first of his career
