PREVIOUSLY AGAINST NORTH DAKOTA
The Aggies lead UND 3-2 in their all-time series which began in the 2001 NCAA Div. II national semifinals... UC Davis is 2-1 against UND at home with all three games played at Aggie Stadium... The teams first met in the `01 postseason in Grand Forks, N.D., with North Dakota posting a 14-2 victory over the Aggies who were making their second straight appearance in the semis... UC Davis won three straight games in the series from 2008-10 before losing 14-7 at home in 2011... QB Randy Wright threw for 286 yards and four touchdowns in UC Davis' most recent win, 35-16 in 2010, including three to former WR Sean Creadick... Former Aggie RB Marquis Nicolisran in from 18 yards for the team's only touchdown in the loss in 2011.
ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH DAKOTA
UND enters its season finale looking for its second straight win after beating Northern Colorado, 24-21, last weekend to snap a four-game losing streak... North Dakota showcases a proficient passing attack which ranks 17th in the FCS at 275.7 ypg., and an offense that scores 89.3 percent of the time in the red zone (11th, FCS)... Conversely, UND is near the bottom (117th of 122 teams) in the FCS in rushing at 83.1 ypg., including gaining just four yards in last week's win... North Dakota has been held to 55 rushing yards or less in seven of its 10 games... However, the 24 offensive touchdowns scored this year have been divided evenly between the run and the pass, although six rushing TD's came in the season-opening win against Valparaiso... QB RYAN BARTELS completed 31 of 47 passes for 344 yards and two touchdowns in the victory over Northern Colorado... He has shared starting duties this season with QB JOE MOLLBERG (1,594 yds, 6 TDs)... WR KENNY GOLLADAY (59-691, 6 TDs) and WR GREG HARDIN (49-879, 4 TDs) are among the top FCS receivers... Hardin is ranked ninth and 12th, respectively, in receiving yards and TDs while Golladay is 18th for catches per game (6.4)...RB JAKE MILLER has 424 rushing yards to lead UND in that department... The defense is 10th in the Big Sky for overall yards (426.3 ypg) and rushing yards (188.8 ypg)... LB GARRISON GOODMAN has 58 total tackles while LB DOMINIQUE BENNETT has a team-high 5.0 sacks and seven quarterback-hurries... S CHAVON MACKEY has two of the team's four interceptions... UND is last in the FCS in turnover margin at -1.8 pg... Hardin and Golladay have also been tough on special teams... Hardin has returned two kickoffs for TDs and is averaging 24.8 yards a return while Golladay has a punt return touchdown.
LOOKING BACK AT THE CAL POLY GAME
TE Taylor Sloat had a season-high five catches, finishing with 54 yards and a 16-yard TD pass from QB Randy Wright just 18 seconds before halftime... It was his third touchdown of the year, surpassing the two he had last season... K Brady Stuart made three field goals (30, 26, 35 yards) for the second time this year (also Idaho State) and third time in his career... His 11 field goals this season tie him for ninth on the Aggies' single-season list (he is also T-2nd with 15 from `12) and extends his consecutive-made field goals streak to four... RB Gabe Manzanares' 141 yards marked his fifth 100-yard game of the year and third straight... His 40-yard rush in the second quarter was his second-longest of the season (50 yds. vs. Idaho State)... UC Davis had three drives of at least 10 plays and each one resulted in a score... S Charles Boyett's 27-yard punt return in the first quarter was his longest of the year... Cal Poly QB Chris Jones passed just five times, completing one attempt for a 15-yard gain... The Mustangs rushed for 414 yards, the second-highest against UC Davis total this season (427 yds, Portland State)... Their 67 attempts, however, were the most versus the Aggies... UC Davis allowed 23 first downs, 22 of them via the rush... The Aggies trailed just 20-16 late in the game but an interception and fumble on consecutive drives led to a pair of five-yard touchdown runs by Cal Poly... UC Davis held a 32:01-27:59 lead in possession time... It was the third straight game it's held an advantage and the seventh time this season... CB Shamawn Wright broke up two passes, giving him a team-high six this season... He added a 25-yard kickoff return and is now ranked 20th in FCS with a 26.7 average... CB Jonathan Perkinsadded a 25-yard kickoff return as well.
HEMMINGSEN GETS 50 CATCHES AGAIN
WR Tom Hemmingsen, who missed last season because of injury, has matched his career-high 50 receptions from 2011 with two games yet to play... He has 522 receiving yards and two touchdowns this season, giving him 113 receptions for 1,284 yards and 12 TDs in his career... Hemmingsen had a career-best 10 catches at Montana State... He needs 12 more to move into the single-season top 10 and has an outside chance to reach 133 career grabs, moving him onto that career ledger.
OFFENSE FINDING MORE CONSISTENCY
The Aggies didn't have more than 300 yards of total offense in any of their first four games but have had at least that many in five of their last six... UC Davis has averaged 372.8 ypg. in that span, up from the 266.5 it averaged in the first four... It had a season-high 488 at Northern Colorado and posted 455 against Idaho State... Overall, the Aggies are averaging 330.3 ypg.
UC DAVIS KEEPING CARE OF THE BALL
UC Davis ranks 28th nationally in taking care of the ball, turning it over just 14 times in 10 games... That also puts it fourth in the Big Sky... Unfortunately, that hasn't translated into a high turnover margin since the Aggies have gained just 11 turnovers (11th in Big Sky, 108th in FCS) and are 78th overall and 11th in the conference with a -0.3 turnover margin.
WRIGHT MOVES UP CAREER CHARTS AS SENIOR SEASON COMES TO A CLOSE
QB Randy Wright has become the Aggies' career leader in both passing attempts and completions with recent performances, surpassing QB Jon Grant (2003-06) in both... He earned the attempts record against Northern Colorado and went past the completions mark a week later at Montana State... Wright also became the third Aggie signal-caller to reach 8,000 career passing yards when he threw for 159 at MSU and is now second all-time... He is also third in touchdowns (53) and is the second Aggie to go past 8,000 yards of total offense... Wright began his playing career in 2010 against Cal, becoming the first freshman since Ryan Flanigan(2000) to start a season opener... He was an All-Great West Conference second-team pick in 2010 and has started 39 career games.
BLOCK THAT KICK
DT Kyle DeVaughn blocked an extra point at Montana State, the third blocked kick for the Aggies this season... DT Anthony Kaspar swatted an extra point against Portland State and CB Jonathan Perkinscame off the edge and blocked a field goal at Southern Utah... The three blocks are the Aggies' most since picking up three in 2009.
MANZANARES A 1,000-YARD RUSHER AND THEN SOME
With his third straight 100-yard game and fifth overall this season after gaining 141 yards against Cal Poly, RB Gabe Manzanares went over 1,000 this season and now has 1,031 yards... He is currently ninth on UC Davis' single-season list and if he maintains his 114.6 average over the next two games, would finish sixth... He has 206 carries, 10th-most in a season... Manzanares is the first 1,000-yard rusher for the Aggies since RB Matt Massariwent for 1,274 yards in 2002... Manzanares has only missed one game this season (Nevada)... He's averaged 132.0 ypg. over his last five starts... Manzanares is ranked 11th nationally in yards per game, 19th for total rushing yards and is third in the Big Sky in both categories... He's also caught 20 receptions for 228 yards, pushing his all-purpose yardage to 139.9 ypg., ranking 21st nationally.
MANZANARES PUTS TOGETHER TWO OF THE AGGIES' BEST RUSHING GAMES
RB Gabe Manzanares broke open his inaugural season with the Aggies by rushing for 208 yards (34 carries) against Idaho State on Sept. 28... He followed that with 175 yards (33) at Southern Utah a week later on Oct. 5 and added 105 at Northern Colorado two weeks ago... His 383 yards against Idaho State and Southern Utah rank seventh in the Aggies' recordbook for back-to-back efforts. The others? 1. Mike Ichiyama, 614 (309-Chico State, 305-San Francisco State, 1994) 2. Preston Jackson, 430 (187-San Francisco State; 243-Sacramento State, 1993) 3. Preston Jackson, 415 (243-Sacramento State, 172-Fort Hays State, 1993) 4. Matt Massari, 401 (221-Cal Poly, 180-Saint Mary's, 2002) 5. JERMAINE RUCKER, 399 (238-Saint Mary's, 161-Western New Mexico, 1996) 6. Preston Jackson, 391 (168-Humboldt State, 223-Chico State, 1992) Manzanare's 208 yards against Idaho State rank T-10th all-time at UC Davis while his 179 yards are 23rd... He was the first Aggie to go over 200 yards since RB Matt Massariin 2002 against Cal Poly (221)... Massari did it twice in `02, earlier gaining 237 against Abilene Christian.
DEFENSIVE LEADERS STRETCH FROM THE FRONT AND THE BACK
S Charles Boyett and S AARYN JONES are first and third in the tackles department for UC Davis with 75 and 55, respectively... LB Steven Pitts is second with 57 stops while DE Nick Kinghas 53... Boyett leads the team with two forced fumbles, has three pass-breakups and has a team-high 44 solo tackles... He's highlighted his junior season with a career-high 14 tackles, including 11 solo, against Cal Poly... Both are season-high totals for the Aggies... Jones had a season-high nine tackles (8 solo) in the season opener at South Dakota, has a team-best two interceptions and is tied for second with four PBUs... Pitts has done a little bit of everything: TFLs (7.0-33), sacks (3.0-28), PBUs (2), fumble recoveries (1) and forced fumbles (1)... King has a team-high 6.0 sacks to go with his 53 total tackles and 6.5 TFLs... He's also recovered and forced a fumble while adding a PBU.
CALIFORNIA IS THE PLACE TO BE --- AT LEAST FOR THE AGGIES
UC Davis has 100 players on its roster and if 99 of them ever need to find a ride home during vacation, they will very likely have a teammate that's from a nearby locale... That's because 99 percent (that's 99 of 100) of the Aggies' roster is home-grown from California... Freshman LB Xavier Griggs is the lone player who might have to scramble for a ride since he hails from Portland, Ore... Griggs is the first out-of-stater since QB Sean Maraz(who was from Phoenix, Ariz., and was on the `11 roster.
PREVIOUSLY.... ON NOVEMBER 16
UC Davis is 5-1 since 1962 when playing on Nov. 16 with one notable achievement occurring on the most recent game on that date... Only one game, a 26-19 win in 1996 against Southern Utah was played in Davis... Other wins came at Chico State in 1968 (38-7), at San Francisco State in 1974 (31-7), and at Sacramento State in 1985 (37-30)... The final win came in 2002 when the Aggies won at Western Washington, 14-7... It was memorable because it featured 100-yard rushing games from UC Davis players - RB O.J. Swanigan (178) and RB Elihu Vann(132) - just one of seven times that's been achieved.

CAL COACHING CONNECTION
Ron Gould spent 16 seasons on the staff at nearby Cal, developing some of the nation's top collegiate - and now professional - running backs while also rising to associate head coach status... It's not surprising then that his Aggie coaching staff has a decidedly "Golden Bear" flavor... Seven members of Gould's coaching and support staff have spent time in Berkeley, including offensive coordinator - and Aggie alum - Kevin Daft who worked alongside Gould for seven seasons as wide receivers and quarterbacks coach... Others include defensive coordinator Bert Watts (2 years as def. asst.), offensive line coach Matt Wiegand (2 years as grad asst.), tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator Ben Steele (2 years as offensive admin. asst.), defensive quality control staff member Robert Haney (1 year as quality control asst.), offensive quality control coach Quinn Tedford (1 year volunteer asst. wide receivers coach and also a former player)... Tedford is the son of former Cal coach Jeff Tedford... Additionally, director of operations Denis Hallin(9 years as admin. asst.) brings extensive experience from Cal.
RUNNING BACKS HAVE FLOURISHED UNDER COACH GOULD
It's no secret that Ron Gouldhas been called one of the, if not the, best running backs coaches in the country... His success with the Bears' ground attack and the NFL-caliber players that excelled under his tutelage have been well-documented... In 2004 he oversaw Cal's best rushing average in more than 50 years at 256.8 ypg which ranked it sixth nationally and helped standout J.J. Arrington finish eighth in the 2004 Heisman Trophy balloting... Several Gould's players went on to the NFL... Jahvid Best (2008) was one of three protegès to lead the Pac-10 in rushing, a trio that also featured Arrington (2004) and Marshawn Lynch (2006).
UC DAVIS VS. FBS COMPETITION
The Aggies played an NCAA Div. I FBS opponent for the ninth consecutive season when they traveled to Nevada on Sept. 7... They are 2-9 with victories over Stanford (20-17; 2005) and San Jose State (14-13, 2010)... Among the other FBS teams they've faced are TCU, Arizona State, Hawai'i, Boise State, Cal and Fresno State... UC Davis also had a memorable upset against (then-called) Div. I-A Pacific in 1986, beating the Tigers 46-41... UC Davis has FBS opponents lined up for each of the next three seasons: Stanford (2014), Nevada (2015) and Oregon (2016).
FINAL HOME GAME FOR AGGIE SENIORS
Sixteen Aggie seniors will be making their final appearance at Aggie Stadium on Saturday... The group will be honored during pregame ceremonies... The 2013 senior class is comprised of DT Khalid Jones, TE WES O'BRIEN, TE Taylor Sloat, TE Cameron Sentance, OL Jimmy Kunkel, LS Joey Waters, S Earnest Sayles III, DE Nick King, QB Randy Wright, TE Ryan O'Holleran, CB Jonathan Perkins, DE Colin Kelly, WR Tom Hemmingsen, S Aaryn JONES, DT Anthony Kaspar and CB Dre Allen.
Several Aggies were recognized by various media outlets during the annual parade of preseason honors... The list includes FB Dalton Turaywho was selected to the preseason All-Big Sky Team, voted by the media as the squad's only fullback... Turay rushed for 234 yards and 7 TDs last year, including three touchdowns in the second quarter alone against Weber State, while also adding 21 receptions for 156 yards and another score.
Phil Steele's Preview Preseason Position Ratings - FB Dalton Turay (#12), TE Taylor Sloat (#18), KR and CB Jonathan Perkins (#19 and #25), DE Nick King (#22), PK Brady Stuart (#28), QB Randy Wright (#33) and WR Corey Galindo(#35).
COACHING TREE HAS MANY LIMBS
Former head coach JIM SOCHOR, still a highly visible member of the Aggie community after bringing great success to UC Davis from 1970-88, helped spawn the coaching careers of several prominent collegiate and professional coaches... CHRIS PETERSEN (Boise State) is an alum of UC Davis who quarterbacked the Aggies in the 1980s, GARY PATTERSON (TCU) is a former coach under Sochor, DAN HAWKINS is another Aggie alum who most notably coached at Boise State and Colorado, Aggie player MIKE BELLOTTI (Oregon) was a highly successful collegiate coach, former player NICK ALIOTTI is currently the defensive coordinator at Oregon, and PAUL HACKETT played for UC Davis before a prominent NFL and collegiate coaching career... And proving the apple doesn't fall far from the Hackett tree, former UC Davis LB Nathaniel Hackett (1999-2002), son of Dan, is currently the offensive coordinator for the Buffalo Bills... The younger Hackett's teammate, S Ejiro Evero, is an offensive assistant with the San Francisco 49ers... A pair of playing alums - QB MARK GRIEB and DB Keith Buckley- are head coaches at the Div. III level... In fact, Grieb's Menlo Oaks will hosted Buck's Pacific (Ore.) Boxers... Pacific won the matchup, 28-21.
WELCOME TO THE BIG SKY CONFERENCE
UC Davis is in its second season of membership in the Big Sky Conference, joining as an affiliated member for the 2012 season... It's the Aggies' fifth league since beginning football in 1915... Other conferences: 1925-81 - Far Western Conference 1982-92 - Northern California Athletic Conference 1993 - American West Conference 2004-11 - Great West Conference UC Davis has won or shared 30 conference championships in its 95-year history, including 20 straight between 1971-90... The Aggies' most recent title came when it won the 2009 Great West title.
NOTABLE PROGRAM STREAKS
Besides 20 consecutive league titles, UC Davis has enjoyed other notable streaks: 442 - Consecutive games with at least 200 yds of offense. (Began in 1969; ended vs. Cal in 2010; 81 yds) 212 - Consecutive games without being shut out. (ended vs. Fresno State, 51-0, in 2009) 37 - Consecutive winning seasons (1970-2006). 35 - Consecutive winning Div. II seasons (1970-2004). (NCAA Div.II record)
UC Davis plays its season finale on Nov. 23 with the 58th annual Causeway Classic at Sacramento State... The Aggies have won the last three matchups in the series and own a 42-18 overall lead in the rivalry... Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. with the game aired on Comcast SportsNet. ... UC Davis won last year's contest, 34-27, in the final game for former head coach Bob Biggs who retired following the 2012 season.
