DAVIS, Calif. - World War II vehicles and helicopters representing the military and law enforcement will be among the many highlights on Saturday as UC Davis Athletics hosts its annual "Salute to Heroes" as part of its football game against the University of North Dakota at Aggie Stadium.
Emergency responders, law enforcement, servicemen and women and others that protect us will be honored as part of the event which will include pregame exhibits and in-game activities and recognition.
Jeeps from WWII will be located inside Aggie Stadium while a Huey helicopter - which will land in an adjacent field in the afternoon - will be available for up-close viewing along with a 1967 ambulance. Both were used during the Vietnam War.
A Cal Star air ambulance and California Highway Patrol helicopters will help kick off the game with a flyover during pregame ceremonies. Additonally, police vehicles, fire engines and mounted police will also be part of the event.
Pregame ceremonies will honor many local veterans, including those from Davis VFW Post 6949, Woodland VFW Post 1985 and Dixon VFW Post 8151. Members of the Military Heritage Club will also be in attendance.
A special part of the ceremonies will involve WWII veteran and former UC Davis employee Ernest Head who will be joined by another veteran and a member of the UC Davis ROTC program for the pregame cointoss.
