NAPERVILLE, Ill. - Utah Valley's Mary Nothum and UC Davis' Greg Denham have been selected the Great West Conference Student-Athletes of the Month for their performances during the month of October.
Nothum, a junior from Washington, Mo., was named the Great West Women's Runner of the Year after she won the GWC Cross Country Championship on Oct. 31, with a blazing time of 22:16.49. With her top finish at the championship, she helped the Wolverines to a first place finish at the conference meet for the second consecutive year. Nothum also placed second overall at Southern Utah's Color Country Invitational on Oct. 10, helping her team to a second place finish, and as UVU's top runner all season long, Nothum helped her team make it to the NCAA Mountain Regional for the first time in school history.
Denham completed 108 of 172 passes for 1,288 yards and 10 touchdowns, helping lead UC Davis to a 3-2 record in October. He helped highlight his month with 27 completions for 380 yards and two TDs in the Aggies' overtime win at South Dakota, including a 24-yard, fourth-and-11 completion in OT that put UC Davis on the 2-yard line, allowing the Aggies to score two plays later and helping lead to an eventual Great West Conference Football Championship.
The junior from Auburn, Calif., posted totals of more than 200 yards in each of UC Davis' other four games in October, including 206 yards and two TDs at FBS powerhouse Boise State. For the month, he had a pass efficiency rating of 142.55 with a long pass of 68 yards.
Denham is the second consecutive Aggie to earn the GWC honor. Receiver Chris Carter was recognized for his standout performances for September.
Other nominees on the women's side included Ligia Clemente (HBU Volleyball), Sabrina Baby (NJIT Volleyball), Lindsay Vortherms (North Dakota Volleyball) and Kristen Kritenbrink (South Dakota Volleyball).
Other standout performances nominated for the men were Mitch Sutton (North Dakota Football) and Jacob Buhler (Utah Valley Cross Country).
