DAVIS, Calif - In the last few weeks, the Associated Press, FCS Athletic Directors Association, STATS FCS and College Sports Madness each bestowed first team All-America awards to junior organizational studies major Keelan Doss. This list of national organizations grew to to six when the American Football Coaches Association and HERO Sports added the Alameda, Calif., native to their All-America teams.
No Aggie in the program’s history earned All-American status from more organizations that Doss this season. He is also one of 13 juniors from across the nation to earn AFCA All-America accolades.
The AFCA has selected an All-America team since 1945 and currently selects teams in all five of its divisions. What makes these teams so special is that they are the only ones chosen exclusively by the men who know the players the best — the coaches themselves.
When HERO Sports revealed its three All-America teams featuring offensive, defensive and special teams selections, Doss was one of four juniors who earned first team honors in any one of those three groups.
Doss, one of three finalists for the Walter Payton Award, presented to the most outstanding FCS offensive player in the nation, set three new all-time single-season program records this past season by finishing with 1,499 receiving yards, 115 receptions and nine 100-yard games.
When the Aggies’ season ended, he also lead all players at the FBS and FCS levels in three categories: receiving yards, receiving yards per game (136.3) and receptions per game (10.5).
The Big Sky’s Offensive Player of the Year is a key reason why UC Davis, the sixth-ranked public school in the nation, finished the 2017 season with the top offense in the conference. In the first season of the Dan Hawkins era, the Aggies set 46 new Big Sky-era records and collected as many victories vs. D-I competition as the previous three seasons combined.
