WAIKOLOA, Hawaii - UC Davis junior Matt Hansen birdied three of his first seven holes on Wednesday, finishing with a 1-under 71 and tying for 23rd after the first round of The Amer Ari Invitational, being hosted by Hawai'i and Hawaii-Hilo.

The tournament, being played at the Kings' Course at Waikoloa Village, features a powerful field with five top-10 teams in the mix, and 10 in Golfstat's top 50. The Aggies are tied for 18th with host Hawai'i after shooting a 10-over par 298.

UC Davis' Tyler Raber posted a 73 and is tied for 51st, Jonny Baxter and Matt Seramin each had 77's and are tied for 96th and freshman Ben Corfee is 115th after finishing with an 80.

TCU and No. 4 UCLA share the 18-hole lead at 11-under 277 while No. 2 Texas (279) is two shots off the pace. Seventh-ranked Washington (280) and No. 25 Auburn (281) round out the top five.

Starting his shotgun round on the 13th hole, Hansen picked up an early birdie on the par-5 14th hole, and then after falling back to even, had back-to-back birdies on the par-5 18th and the par-4 1st. He added another birdie later in the round to help push him back in the red.

Raber also had a birdie on the 14th hole and then added three more birdies and an eagle - the latter coming on the par-5 2nd - to help in his round. Baxter's 77 was highlighted by a trio of birdies on a birdie on the 18th while Seramin's featured two birdies. Corfee, making his Aggie debut, had a birdie on the par-5 4th.

TCU's Daniel Jennevret shot a 67 and has a one-shot lead over eight players including teammate Eli Cole.

Thursday's shotgun round begins at 9:30 a.m. (PST). UC Davis will play with Auburn, TCU and San Jose State. The tournament concludes on Friday.
