LA QUINTA, Calif. - Sparked by a 4-under 67 from Ben Corfee and a 70 from Luke Vivolo, the UC Davis men's golf team saved its best performance for last, shooting a 5-under 279 in the final round of the Prestige at PGA WEST on Wednesday at the Greg Norman Course in La Quinta.
The Aggies moved up one spot in the final standings, finishing 10th in the high-caliber field which included eight top-50 teams and the University of Stirling from Scotland. Matt Hansen, Jonny Baxter and Mike Brockington each added 71s for UC Davis which had a 14-shot improvement over its second-round score.
Hansen finished tied for 12th in the final player standings at 2-under while Corfee and Baxter tied for 28th at 2 over. Vivolo tied for 56th with a 10-over total while Brockington was 66th at 15 over. Joshua Granger and Noya, playing as individuals, tied for 48th and 64th, respectively. Granger shot 71 and finished 6 over while Noya had a 74 and was 14 over.
Stanford, which co-hosts the annual event with UC Davis, won the tournament with a 21-under total of 831, holding off Washington. The No. 11 Cardinal shot 2 under in the final round while the No, 17 Huskies had an impressive 14-under 270. UCLA, ranked 23rd, was third at 11 under while No. 33 LSU took fourth at 6 under.
Stanford's Patrick Rodgers finished his week with a 71 and was 9 under, earning medalist honors by a stroke over Max Rotluff of Arizona State. Rotluff had a 67 in the final round. Gerrit Chambers of Washington took third at 7 under.
Corfee, who had a 68 in Monday's first round before struggling to an 80 in the second, rebounded strongly in the last round with his 67 - the best Aggie score for the tournament. Opening on the 10th hole, Corfee picked up an early birdie and then had eight straight pars before adding three birdies over a four-hole span to start his back nine. He had just one bogey.
Vivolo cut eight shots off his Tuesday total of 78 with a 70 on Wednesday. He was 2 under after four holes and then was even before ending his day with a birdie-3 on the ninth hole. He had four birdies overall. Hansen added another fine round to his week, jumping out with three consecutive birdies on his first three holes but then made his turn even. He added another birdie on his 14th hole to help him play his back nine even as well.
Baxter backed up his second-round 68 with a 71 on Wednesday with the help of five birdies, including three on par-five holes. Brockington also posted an eight-shot improvement, highlighted by birdies on the 11th and 12th holes, and an eagle-2 on the 14th.
Granger, who was just 1 over on the final two days, had two birdies and 14 pars in the final round, playing the course's front nine 1 under. Noya had a five-shot improvement over the last 24 hours, carding two birdies on the first three holes of the front nine.
The Aggies will off until competing at the Bandon Dunes Championship in Oregon on Mar 9-11.
