BANDON, Ore. - An early birdie followed by an eagle highlighted Tyler Raber'sround on Friday, helping him into a tie for third and leading the UC Davis men's golf team into sixth after the first day of the Bandon Dunes Championship.

UC Davis fired a team score of 8-over 296 and trailsl first-place Oregon by only six shots with 36 holes remaining over the weekend.

Raber had a 1-under 71 to lead the Aggies who also received a 72 from Matt Hansen, who is tied for eighth. Ben Corfee is tied for 23rd after a 74 and Matt Seramin is tied for 74th after posting a 79. Jonny Baxtershot an 80 and is tied for 80th.

Oregon is 2 under and leads Missouri-Kansas City and Colorado by one shot. Fourteenth-ranked SMU is in fourth at 6 over while San Jose State is 7 over, just one shot ahead of UC Davis.

Starting on the 11th hole, Raber opened with three straight pars before a birdie on the par-4 14th hole put him 1 under. He picked up his eagle three holes later, taming the par-5 17th to move to 3 under. Nine pars and just two bogeys the rest of the way kept him in the red.

Raber is one of seven players that broke par on Friday. He is tied with four of those players, one shot back of Harry Higgs of SMU and Troix Tonkham of Fresno State who had 2-under 70's.

Hansen had five birdies during his opening round, playing the front nine of the Old Macdonald Course at Bandon Dunes three shots under par. Corfee was 1 under on the front, covering the nine holes with three birdies including consecutive birdies on the third and fourth holes. Seramin had one birdie while Baxter had 11 pars.

The Aggies will continue action in the 18-team tournament, being hosted by Gonzaga, on Saturday beginning at 8 a.m. UC Davis will play with Pacific and Santa Clara.
