Corfee paces UC Davis through two rounds at Duck Invite

EUGENE, Ore. - Senior Ben Corfee shot UC Davis' low round in each set of 18 holes during Monday's action at the Oregon Duck Invitational men's golf tournament. He fired an 1-over-par 72 in the opening session then carded a 2-over 73 in the nightcap round to finish with a total of 145 and a tie for 22nd place in the individual standings.

As a team, UC Davis totaled a 296 in the first round and 301 in the second to close out the day in 12th place at 29 over par. The Duck Invite takes place at the par-71, 7020-yard Eugene Country Club.

Corfee birdied three holes in his first round, then closed the day with a birdie 3 on the 445-yard home hole to finish in the six-way tie for 22nd place. Junior Evan Knight finished two strokes back with a 147 total, good for t32nd place. He highlighted his Monday with an eagle on the 545-yard fifth in the afternoon round.

Junior Brandon Baumgarten, a former Duck before transferring to UC Davis midyear in 2015-16, shot a 73 in the opening around and a 77 in the nightcap to finish in t57th at 150 strokes. Freshman Matt Robinson had rounds of 78 and 79 for his share of 78th place, while junior Jeremy Sanchez finished the day a stroke behind Robinson in t80th.

The fifth-ranked hosts enter the final round at 7-under-par 560, holding a 10-stroke lead over second-place Arizona's 2-over 570. Duck senior Sulman Raza, playing as an individual entrant, posted rounds of 67 and 64 to finish Monday with a seven-stroke lead toward individual medalist honors. Denver's Petter Mikalsen and Oregon's Norman Xiong are tied for second at 4-under 138.

The Duck Invitational resumes play with a final 18-hole round on Tuesday. This is the first of two Spring Break tournaments for UC Davis, which will seek to defend its team title at Stanford's Goodwin later this week.
