TEMPE, Ariz. - Jonny Baxter was 2-under on his front nine, sparking him to a team-best 2-under 69 on Friday and pacing the UC Davis men's golf team into 11th place after the first round of the Arizona State Thunderbird Invitational at Arizona State.

The Aggies were 9-over 293 after the first round at ASU Karsten Golf Course after also picking up rounds of 74 from Matt Hansen, who is tied for 51st, matching 75's from Tyler Raber and Ben Corfee, who are each tied fo 60th, and 80 by Matt Seramin, who is tied for 94th.

UC Davis, coming off a fifth-place performance at Stanford's U.S. Intercollegiate last weekend, are three strokes behind Iowa State and Arizona who are tied for ninth, and four back of seventh-place New Mexico State and San Diego.

"Our heads and spirits are up," said Aggie coach Cy Williams. "We are playing very well, we just had a bit of a rough one today. There's a lot of golf left."

Third-ranked New Mexico shot 8-under 276 and holds a five-shot lead over San Diego State in the 18-team tournament.

Starting on the 10th hole on Friday, Baxter opened with four consecutive pars before back-to-back birdies on the par-5 14th and par-4 15th put him 2 under. He was even with two holes remaining but birdied a pair of par-4 holes to end his day, giving him a 69.

Baxter is in a six-way tie for sixth, five shots behind leader Nick Chianello of Oregon State who carded a 64.

Hansen, who birdied the par-4 4th, was just 1 over on his final nine holes to help him shoot 74. Raber had two early birdies in his round and was 2 over on each side while Corfee birdied three of his first five holes before eventually coming in, like Raber, with a 75. Seramin was 7 over on his opening nine holes but six consecutive pars helped him cover the final nine just two shots over par.

Teams will play the second round on Saturday morning. UC Davis will begin on the first hole starting at 7:30 and will play alongside Iowa State, Arizona and Harvard.
