Results and Live Scoring
TEMPE, Ariz. - Tyler Raber's 2-under 69 and Jonny Baxter's 70 sparked a strong UC Davis effort on Saturday as the Aggie men's golf team shot 2-under 282 to move into a tie for eighth after the second round of the ASU Thunderbird Invitational at Arizona State.
Baxter's second straight impressive round kept him in a tie for sixth-place at 3 under in the 100-player field while Raber climbed 25 spots into a tie for 35th at 2 over. The Aggies' three other players competing this weekend either equaled or bettered their first-round scores.
Matt Seramin was nine shots better and fired a 71 and is tied for 79th at 9 over, Ben Corfee improved by three strokes and is tied for 47th at 5 over, and Matt Hansen shot a second consecutive 74 and is tied for 51st at 6 over.
The Aggies are tied for eighth with Iowa State and New Mexico State at 7-over 575 and are only one shot behind seventh-place Arizona.
"It was great to see everyone contribute today," said Aggie coach Cy Williams. "We all played pretty well and there is still room to go a lot lower tomorrow. It's going to be a fun final-round battle."
Third-ranked New Mexico continued to hold the team lead, shooting 2 over on Saturday for a 6-under 562 total. The Lobos lead San Diego (564) and Oregon State by two shots with California (566), UNLV and San Diego State chasing from fourth place.
Raber, who had a 75 during Friday's first round, was strong throughout Saturday's play. His birdie on the par-4 4th hole put him in the red while eight straight pars after that kept him there until he added another birdie on the par-4 13th. He was even the rest of the way, finishing with a 69.
Baxter carded a 69 during his opening round on Friday and nearly matched it on Saturday. He had pars on each of his first nine holes and then birdied the par-5 10th and the 13th holes to move two shots below par. He had four pars and his only bogey the remainder of the round.
Seramin's round was highlighted by birdies on both the front and back nine, balancing two bogeys. He had 14 pars to help him with his strong comeback. Hansen had four birdies to help his round of 74 while Corfee posted three birdies and an impressive eagle on the par-5 17th while shooting a 72.
Oregon State's Nick Chianello maintained the individual lead at the 18-team tournament, following his opening-round 64 with a 68 on Saturday. At 10 under, he leads Scott Fernandez of Iowa State by two shots.
The teams will complete the 54-hole tournament on Sunday morning. UC Davis will tee off beginning at 7:30 and is grouped with Iowa State, Pepperdine and St. John's.
