TEMPE, Ariz. - Tyler Raber's par-71 led UC Davis in the final round of the ASU Thunderbird Invitational while Jonny Baxtertied for 11th overall as the Aggie men's golf team finished eighth at Arizona State's tournament on Sunday.
Baxter shot a final-round 73, posting a 54-hole total of 1-under 212 for his second-best finish this season. Raber, who was 2 under over the final two rounds, was 1 over overall and tied for 23rd. Ben Corfee and Matt Seramin each shot 72 on Sunday, tying for 43rd and 64th, respectively, while Matt Hansentied for 68th after shooting 77.
UNLV, ranked 30th, rallied from a fourth-place tie after the second round to win the team title at 9 under after shooting 7-under 277 on Sunday. Top-ranked Cal (8 under) was second, San Diego (5 under) took third and third-ranked New Mexico (2 under) placed fourth.
The Aggies were 4 over in the last round and 11 over for the tournament, finishing three shots behind seventh-place Iowa State and two in front of ninth-place Arizona.
"I thought we did a really good job coming back the last two rounds after putting ourselves in a tough spot after the first round," said head coach Cy Williams. "We finished ahead of (12th place) Arizona State, which is ranked 43rd, on their home course so that's a pretty big win for us."
Raber played a steady round on Sunday, carding a birdie on the par-4 4th hole to go 1 under and then making the turn 1 over. He birdied the par-5 10th before picking up pars on the final eight holes to post a 71. Baxter was 1 over on each of the front and back nines, collecting three birdies on the day. His 11th-place finish was second only to a tie for 10th at the SCVB Pacific Invitational last October.
"Jonny Baxter had a great event," Williams said. "He finished tied with the No. 1 player (Michael Kim, Cal) in the country and beat the No. 2 player (Joel Stalter, Cal) so it was a really strong performance by Jonny."
Corfee's back-to-back birdies on the 10th and 11th holes helped him cover the final holes even. He was 6 over for the weekend. Seramin had three birdies on Sunday, including two on the front nine which he played a shot below par. He was 10 over for the tournament. Hansen had a birdie on each side, shooting 12 over in the tournament overall.
Oregon State's Nick Chianello led the tournament wire-to-wire, finishing 11 under and winning by one stroke over Scott Fernandez of Iowa State and Cal's Brandon Hagy.
UC Davis will return to competition on Apr. 19-21 when it co-hosts the Winchester Classic with Nevada at Winchester Country Clun in Meadow Vista.
