SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - Behind a career-best 2-under 68 from sophomore Jonny Baxter, the UC Davis men's golf team shot a 2-under 278 on Tuesday, rallying six spots to finish 12th at the Wyoming Cowboy Classic at Talking Stick North Golf Club.
The Aggies finished at 7-over 847 for the 54-hole tournament, jumping significantly from their first-day position. UC Davis tied for Tuesday's fifth-best score in the 23-team tournament.
Baxter, who had his second-lowest rounds of the year with a pair of 70's on Monday, beat his previous career-best round of 69 by shooting 68 on Tuesday. He finished tied for 17th at 2-under 208 overall.
Matt Hansen also had a sub-70 round for the Aggies, shooting 69 to finish 4-over 214 for the week and tied for 55th. Matt Seramin, who tied for 43rd at 2-over 212, shot 70 in the final round while Luke Vivolo tied for 49th after his 71 put him 3-over 213 overall. Josh Granger carded a 74 for the third straight round, tying for 99th at 12-over 222.
The Aggies finished just two shots behind 11th-place Nevada (845), which they'll co-host the Winchester Intercollegiate with next week. They edged host Wyoming and Big West Conference member UC Santa Barbara which tied for 13th at 8-over 848.
"We had a nice last round," said head coach Cy Williams. "It was good to see Jonnny elevate his game."
Kansas State had a final-round 1-over 281, finishing at 14-under 826 and claiming a two-shot win over Colorado (828). San Diego (829), Texas Tech (833) and Colorado State (834) finished the top five.
Ben Jeffer of Kansas State, who shot 67 on Tuesday, won medalist honors in a playoff with Colorado State's Mike Wuertz after both players tied at 12-under 198.
UC Davis and Nevada will co-host next week's tournament, which runs Apr. 20-22 at Winchester Country Club in Meadow Vista.
