TURLOCK, Calif. - Ryan Thornberry turned in the day's best round-score of 67 to open the 30th Annual Buzzini/Stanislaus Invitational to lead the Cal State Stanislaus Warriors to a six-stroke lead after two rounds of play at the par-72, 6,641-yard Turlock Country Club on Monday.
UC Davis struggled through its opening two rounds and sits tied for 7th, 35 strokes off the lead at 609 following the first two rounds.
In the team standings, the Warriors shot a 290 and followed with a 284 for a two-under 574 team score. Cal State Stanislaus, winner of seven straight at this event, leads Chico State by six strokes. Grand Canyon is in third (589), Western Washington fourth (593) and Abilene Christian fifth (601).
Grand Canyon's Tommy Medina shot a 67 in the afternoon to finish at six-under on Monday and is tied withy Thornberry for the individual lead. Chico State's J.J. Jakovac, the defending NCAA Division II national champion, carded a pair of 70s to be at four-under for the day, two strokes off the pace. Stanislaus' Jim Schafer, with a 74 in round one and a four-under 68 in the afternoon, is the only other player at under-par with a two-under 142 heading into Tuesday's final round of play.
UC Davis was led by junior Chris Kilkenny, who finished the first day at 6-over par, 150, tied for 16th. Scott Gordon (153) and Eric Restrepo (153) are tied for 30th while Brett Borchers (154) is tied for 36th and Jay Westerlund (156) is tied for 48th.
Play concludes at the Buzzini Invitational on Tuesday with a final 18 holes.
