STANFORD, Calif. -- Freshman Phil Huffman fired a 2-over par 72 on Sunday, his lowest round of the weekend, as UC Davis shot a final-round team score of 298 to finish in a tie for 10th place at the U.S. Intercollegiate, played at the par-70, 6,742-yard Stanford Golf Course.

The Aggies finished the 54-hole tournament at 39-over 879, tying Arkansas on the leaderboard. Washington State was four shots ahead of UC Davis in eighth place while Xavier finished four shots back in 12th. Top-ranked Stanford held a five-shot lead over No. 43 Minnesota going into Sunday's last round but the Golden Gophers posted a 3-under 277 - the lowest score of the day - and tied the Cardinal at 2-under 838. However, Stanford claimed the tournament title on tiebreakers.

Huffman posted the Aggies' lowest score of the day, carding a pair of birdies on both the front and back nine to finish with a 72. He opened the tournament with scores of 77 and 75 on Saturday and tied for 51st place at 224. Junior Matt Marshall had his second 73 of the tournament, recording 12 pars on Sunday. He finished the weekend just six shots over par at 216, tying for 21st place marking the Aggies top finish.

Junior Nate Pistacchio had a 77 in the last round, ending at 10-over 220 and tying for 36th place, Gregg Button joined Huffman in a tie for 51st after his 76, and David Leuterio carded a 78 and tied for 62nd at 228.

Stanford's Rob Grube had his third straight round in the 60's, shooting 68 on Sunday and winning medalist honors at 8-under 202. He opened the tournament on Saturday with rounds of 65 and 69. Bronson LaCassies of Minnesota had the low round of the day, going three under to shoot 67 earn second at 204. The Cardinal had four players in the top 10 while Minnesota had four.

 

 

UC Davis will conclude its 2006-07 season on Apr. 20-21 when it travels to Provo, Utah for the Ping Cougar Classic.
