EL MACERO, Calif. - Joshua Granger fired a bogey-free round of 5-under 67 during the first round of the El Macero Classic at El Macero Country Club on Friday, as the UC Davis men's golf team took an early lead in the standings.
The Aggies fired a 5-under 283 team score to lead Big West Conference rival Cal State Fullerton (-2) by two shots. Nevada and Sacramento State are each 5 over and tied for third.
Luke Vivolo shot a 70 and is in third for UC Davis which also has senior Matt Hansen in the top 10 after his 72 put him a tie for ninth. Nicolas Noya is tied for 20th after shooting 74 while Ben Corfee had an 80 and is tied for 60th.
"I'm very happy with our first round," said Aggie coach Cy Williams. "Josh had an outstanding round. He really played the golf course well, he played it smart and he just let his talent take over on some of the par-5's.
"It's good to see different people stepping up," he added. "That's one thing we've been looking for this year; if somebody has a rough day then everybody else steps up."
The tournament is being co-hosted by UC Davis and Nevada. El Macero Country Club is the Aggies' home course and is site for a soon-to-be constructed short-game facility to benefit both the men's and women's programs.
"The staff at El Macero has done a wonderful job in setting up the course in great condition for the tournament," said Williams.
Granger made the most of those conditions, posting a season-low tying 67 which he also had last week at the Wyoming Cowboy Classic in Arizona. Granger had a pair of birdies on the front nine on Friday before adding three more on the back, including back-to-back ones on the 14th and 15th holes. He played the four par-5 holes 3 under.
He trails Mark Anguiano of Cal State Fullerton by just two shots after Anguiano carded a 65.
Vivolo had a bogey on the second hole but then was 3 under the rest of the day with no bogeys as he put himself near the top of the leaderboard. Hansen had four birdies overall, posting bookend birdies on the front nine where he was 1 under.
Noya birdied his opening hole and then added another on the par-5 15th while Corfee had two birdies over his final five holes.
Three Aggies are playing the tournament as individuals. Mike Brockington was 1 under on the back nine and is tied for 14th after shootin 74, Jonny Baxter was 1 under over his final eight holes and is tied for 27th after shooting 75, and Will Scarlett is tied for 57th after finishing with a 79. He had two birdies on his back nine.
The 12 teams will continue with second-round action on Saturday. UC Davis will begin teeing off at 10:30 a.m.
