EL MACERO, Calif. - Luke Vivolo's 4-under 68 on Saturday put him in second place while Matt Hansen's 69 jumped him into a tie for third as the UC Davis men's golf team opened a commanding 18-shot lead after two rounds of the El Macero Classic at El Macero Country Club.
Joshua Granger is tied for sixth, giving UC Davis a formidable presence in the top 10. Nicolas Noya fired a 73 and is tied for 13th while Ben Corfee, a day after shooting an 80, bounced back in a strong way with a 69 and is tied for 21st.
The Aggies went low with a 9-under 279, eight shots better than any other team in the field, and are 14-under 562 overall. Cal State Fullerton is in second place at 4 over after shooting 7-over 295 on Saturday. Sacramento State is third (+7), Grand Canyon is fourth (+8) and Colorado State (+18) and Cal Poly (+18) are tied for fifth.
Vivolo is 6 under after 36 holes and trails 36-hole leader Mark Anguiano (-7) of Cal State Fullerton by just one shot. Hansen is tied for third at 3 under with Hayden Webb of Grand Canyon.
"The guys started well today and played hard all the way through the finish line," said Aggie coach Cy Williams. "Luke, Matt and Ben had outstanding rounds. Everyone played well."
Vivolo followed his 70 on Friday with another impressive round on Saturday. He had three birdies on the front nine and added two more on the back to go to 5 under after 15 holes. Two bogeys and a birdie the rest of the way brought him in with a 68.
Hansen's 69 was fueled by five birdies, including three over the final five holes which helped him play the back nine 2 shots under par. He had just two bogeys.
Corfee's big improvement started with a strong opening nine holes which included four birdies and no bogeys. Another birdie on the par-3 12th pushed him five shots in the red before he eventually finished with a 69. His day jumped him 39 spots in the standings. He's 5 over for the weekend.
Noya, who is just 3 over for the tournament, had one of the best starts on the course Saturday. He had a birdie on the par-4 first hole and then an eagle on the par-5 second. Noya eventually made his turn 1 under.
Granger, who had a 67 in the opening round, had two early birdies and was 1 under at his turn. He had one birdie on the back and is 1 under overall.
Three Aggies are playing as individual's in this weekend's tournament. Mike Brockington is in 29th place at 6 over after shooting 77, Will Scarlett is tied for 53rd at 13 over after carding 78, and Jonny Baxter is tied for 59th at 14 over after posting an 83.
UC Davis is looking for its first tournament title of the year and for key momentum heading into next week's Big West Championship.
The Aggies will tee off the final round of the El Macero Classic starting at 8:03 a.m. Sunday.
