MEADOW VISTA, Calif. - Ben Corfee had an eagle-2 on his first hole and made it stand up the rest of the way as he fired a 2-under 70 to lead the host UC Davis men's golf team into second place after the first round of the 2nd Annual Winchester Classic at Winchester Country Club on Friday.
The Aggies shot a 1-over 289 team score and trail Big West Conference rival UC Santa Barbara (287) by just two strokes. Cal State Fullerton, also from the Big West, is in third place a stroke behind the Aggies at 2 over while Nevada and Oklahoma Christian are tied for fourth at 6 over.
Corfee led three UC Davis players in the top 10. Tyler Raber and Jonny Baxter each carded 72's and are tied for 10th place. Matt Hansen is tied for 24th after shooting 75 while Matt Seramin finished with a 76 and is tied for 32nd.
"It was a very good start for us," said Aggie coach Cy Williams. "It's great to see Ben Corfee come through with his round. He's been playing really well lately. Jonny and Tyler were very solid for us as well. We're excited because we're showing depth from 1 through 5 and that's going to make us a really competitive team."
Corfee used an eagle on the first hole to quickly move to 2 under before extending it to three shots below par after a birdie on the par-5 4th hole. He made the turn 3 under and eventually gave two shots back before a birdie on the par-5 18th gave him his round of 70.
Two consecutive birdies helped Raber finish his first nine holes at 1 under and he later moved to 2 under before finishing with a 72. Three birdies and six pars gave Baxter a 3-under score at his turn. He played the back nine 3 over. Hansen played his back nine even on his way to a 75 while Seramin was just 1 over on his last nine holes, coming in with a 76.
Sobhani had two birdies in his first round, Brockington highlighted his day with an eagle on the par-5 9th hole, and Scarlett had an early birdie while playing his front nine just 2 over.
Brett Silvernail of UC Santa Barbara shot a 3-under 69 to take an early one-shot lead over Corfee and three other players. Nine players finished the first round in the red.
UC Davis will begin the second round at 11 a.m. and will play alongside UCSB and Cal State Fullerton.
