PROVO, Utah - Freshman Phil Huffman shot an even-par 72 on Saturday as UC Davis shot a team score of four-over 292 to move up one spot in the final team standings and finish ninth at the Ping Cougar Classic, hosted by BYU at the 7,001-yard course at the Riverside Country Club.
The tournament brings to a close the 2006-07 UC Davis season.
Besides Huffman's 72, the Aggies also got strong rounds from Matt Marshall and Gregg Button who each had 1-over 73's, and from junior Nate Pistacchio who only gave up two shots to par and finished with a 74. UC Davis played with just four players in the final round as senior standout Louie Bishop withdrew from the tournament in keeping with his Seventh-day Adventist faith which observes the Sabbath from sundown on Friday until sundown on Saturday. Bishop was tied for 22nd place in the tournament before withdawing.
The Aggies' quartet on Saturday helped them climb from 10th after the opening day to ninth in the final standings at 14-over 878. BYU led wire-to-wire in the 18-team event, shooting 282 on Saturday to win the 54-hole tournament at 32-under 832. The Cougars finished well in front of second-place Nevada, which was at 847, and Colorado State which took third at 8-under 856.
Daniel Summerhays of BYU fired a 5-under 67 over the final 18 holes to edge teammate Jake Ellison by a stroke at 11-under 205 and earn medalist honors.
Marshall and Huffman ended the tournament by tying for 36th place at 3-over 219 while Button shot his second 73 of the weekend and tied for 53rd at 7-over 223. Pistacchio tied for 72nd at 227.
