Raber Leads Three Aggies in Winchester Top 10

MEADOW VISTA, Calif. - Senior Tyler Raber's eagle on the 18th hole lifted him to a par-72 and led three Aggies in the top 10 as the host UC Davis men's golf team finished second at the Winchester Classic at Winchester Country Club on Sunday.

Raber finished in sixth place while Jonny Baxter and Ben Corfee each tied for eighth to help the Aggies' efforts. Matt Hansen tied for 17th and Matt Seramin tied for 30th.

Second-day leader UC Davis, which will play at the Big West Championships next week, fired a 7-over 295 in Sunday's final round. The Aggies finished 9 over for the weekend, five shots back of Cal State Fullerton which shot 2-under 286 in the final round.

"We weren't the better golf team today but we found five good guys for next week and that's when it's going to count the most," said head coach Cy Williams.

Raber's third consecutive par round featured three birdies. He was 2 over going into the last hole but eagled the par-5 18th to balance out his card. He was 1 under on the back nine.

Baxter was 4 over after eight holes but played the last 10 holes three shots under par thanks to a trio of birdies. He carded a 73 and was 2 over for the tournament. Corfee shot 75 in the final round, picking up four birdies and playing his last nine holes just one shot above par. He was 2 over also.

Hansen's 75 on Sunday featured three birdies including two on the front nine which he played to par while Seramin had a pair of birdies including one on the par-5 9th hole. Hansen finished 6 over for the weekend while Seramin was 11 over.

UC Davis also had three players competing as individuals. Mike Brockington tied for 37th after his 77 on Sunday put him 15 over for the tournament. Will Scarlett, who had a 76, tied for 40th at 17 over, while B.K. Sobhani shot 81 and tied for 45th at 20 over.

Oklahoma Christian's Sam Johnston kept his lead and shot 70 on Sunday to win medalist honors at 7-under 209. Glen Scher of UC Santa Barbara was second at 5 under.

UC Davis will open play at the Big West Championships next Sunday looking for their third consecutive title. The tournament is being played at The Country Club at Soboba Springs in San Jacinto, Calif.
