PROVO, Utah - The University of Utah fired a first-day total of 8-under 568 and sits three strokes ahead of host Brigham Young (571) after two rounds of play at the 2004 Ping Golf Cougar Classic Friday afternoon at the par 72, 7,001-yard Riverside Country Club.
UC Davis, coming off back-to-back tournament titles in its last two outings, sits in ninth place, 14 strokes off the lead at 582. The Aggies went 5-over 293 in the day's first round then came back in the afternoon with a 1-over, 289.
Following the tournament leaders, Boise State (572) sits in third place while Texas-El Paso (573) and Colorado State (573) are tied for fourth, five strokes off the lead.
Individually, UTEP's Chris Baryla (136) matched the day's low round with a 6-under 66 in the morning then came back with a 2-under 70 in the afternoon and holds a one-stroke lead over Hawaii's Matthew Kodama (137). Boise State's Graham DeLaet (138) and BYU's Greg Machtaler (138) are tied for third while Fresno State's Ryan Carter (139) is in fifth, just three strokes off the lead.
For the Aggies, sophomore Erik Hill is the only player under par at 1-under 143 after rounds of 73 and 70. Senior Scott Gordon is at even-par, 144, and in a tie for 23rd. Freshman Louie Bishop is tied for 40th at 147 while junior Eric Restrepo (148) is tied for 46th and Chris Kilkenny (157) is tied for 74th.
Play continues at the BYU Ping Golf Cougar Classic with a final 18 holes on Saturday.
