Aggies Sit In Fifth Following First Day At Cougar Classic

PROVO, Utah - Fresno State shot a two-round score of 33-under par to take a one-stroke lead over host Brigham Young following the first two rounds of the Ping Golf Cougar Classic, played Friday on the par 72, 7,001-yard Riverside Country Club.

UC Davis (564), playing its final tournament of the season, shot a first-day score of 12-under and sits in fifth place, 21 strokes off the lead.

Fresno State posted back-to-back rounds of 272-271 for a first-day score of 543. Brigham Young (544) came close to matching the Bulldogs' score, with rounds of 273-271, with Colorado State (551) and San Diego State (555) holding down the spots ahead of UC Davis. Colorado State shot the day's best round with a 21-under, 267, in the afternoon.

Individually, Fresno State's Mark Modglin holds a four-stroke lead over BYU teammates Oscar Alvarez and Nick Belker, following his 14-under par, 130 first-day score. Alvarez (134) and Belker (134) are tied for second, with Air Force's Tyler Goulding (135) in fourth, ahead of four players six strokes off the lead.

UC Davis was led by sophomore Louie Bishop, who sits seven strokes back after rounds of 68-69--137, tied for ninth. Steven Strong (139) is tied for 15th at 5-under, while Jay Westerlund (142) is two-under par and tied for 33rd. Eric Restrepo (146) is tied for 58th while Erik Hill (157) is in 98th.

Play concludes at the Ping Golf Cougar Classic with a final 18 holes on Saturday.
