Aggies End Season With Seventh-Place Finish At Cougar Classic

PROVO, Utah - Fresno State fired a final round of 11-under, 277, the low score of the day, to complete its wire-to-wire victory over host Brigham Young following the final round of the Ping Golf Cougar Classic, played Saturday on the par 72, 7,001-yard Riverside Country Club.

UC Davis, which entered the day in fifth place, shot a 3-over, 291, on Saturday to finish in seventh place.

Fresno State was the only team to shoot in the 270's each round, finished the two-day event at 44-under par, 820, eight strokes ahead of BYU (828). Colorado State (829), San Diego State (834) and Southern Utah (847) rounded out the top five. The Aggies finished the two-day event with a final score of 855.

Individually, three Fresno State players were at the top of the board as Mark Modglin took home medalist honors with a three-round score of 14-under, 202. He was one stroke ahead of teammate Ryan Carter (203) and two strokes better than another teammate, Brian Kelly (204), and BYU's Nick Belker (204).

The Aggies were led by Steven Strong, who finished the tournament at 4-under, 212, 10 strokes off the lead and tied for 24th. Jay Westerlund shot 74 on Saturday to finish at even par, 216, tied for 44th while Eric Restrepo finished in a tie for 55th at 219 after shooting a 1-over, 73, on Saturday. Erik Hill ended the event tied for 94th after his best round of the tournament on Saturday, a 1-under 71, the low Aggie score of the day.

The Ping Golf Cougar Classic marked the final tournament of the 2005 season for UC Davis.
